It is such a pleasure to read a book that finally points out that the Florentine painters were not the leaders-of-the-painting-world they have mistakenly believed to be, since Vasari's Florentine-propaganda book, The Lives of the Artists. The quattrocento Florentines themselves were the first to say that they were trying, unsuccessfully, to emulate the Flemish painters: compare Masaccio and van Eyck; the paintings are virtually contemporary. The book is beautifully made and very well written. I recommend it highly.

This is a highly engaging book. Although the attempt to re-create an Italian national identity over the last 200 years may have led mostly to diappointment and nearly to total failure after the Fascist deviation, Professor Duggan does allow that today's inhabitants are more 'Italian' than they were, however uncertain and contested the idea of 'Italy' remains.

If you really want to know what you're looking at when you visit Rome, this book is a must for your suitcase! It is brisk, erudite, academic but highly accessible and fascinating. The layout is useful, too, with introductions relating to the building materials and general history. I was given it for Christmas so had plenty of time to read it before we went to Rome in March for a wonderful six days. It hugely contributed to my enjoyment of this fantastic city, where there is little interpretation of the archaeology on the ground, as it were, with a complete lack of signs, identification and interpretation. You still need a tourist guide book to get you to the sites, though, as there is no overall map of the city in the book, guiding you to where ... Read More:

I enjoyed this book, particularly the first hand accounts. It is impossible not to be moved and impressed by what ordinary people went through in the war. It also makes you realise the reality behind even the most 'minor' of engagements in the war - engagements which would often be considered too minor to be included in history books with a more sweeping narrative. My only reservation about the book is that it does not go very far in proving that the Italy campaign did make a vital contribution to the overall war effort. And also, as nearly always with military books, there were not enough maps or good enough maps. However, I would recommend this book and also the Imperial War Museum book on the Burma campaign.

237.Monte Cassino (Cassell Military Paperbacks) by: Sven Hassel

The hill is Monte Cassino, and the horror is the carnage of Allied attempts to wrest it from the Germans in 1944, among whom are numbered the lads of the 27th Penal Battalion.
A classic Sven Hassel, with all the right ingredients - blood, guts, fear, high comedy and magnificent courage - with the shattered monastery ruins and the seedy streets of wartime Rome as the backdrop. The plot? Defend the hill to the last man.
The outcome? A compelling tale from the master of World War Two pulp fiction.
Enjoy it.

I bought this on the basis of the promise of new insights into the character and history of the much-reviled Lucrezia Borgia. Whether or not the re-writing of the popular stories about her actually appears in the book I really couldn't tell you, because after three or four chapters of leaden, unengaging prose I put it down and haven't picked it up again. You'd think it would be difficult to make one of the livelier women of one of the livelier periods of history dull, but after finding myself propping my eyelids open with matchsticks and struggling to reach the end of the page I realised that perhaps this book's most remarkable achievement was just that.
There are other books about the period - I bought Mary Hollingsworth's "The Cardinal's Hat" ... Read More:

I've owned both the surfing guides to Europe (Stormrider and footprint guide) as well as the Stormrider World guides....The new Stormrider Guide Europe the continent raises the bar again - Stormrider is always the best looking of the surf guides with the most detailed info. The new European guide has new and proper usable maps and great info in a format that is much easier to use than the footprint guides. There's great chapters on the Med coasts, Germany, Denmark, Holland and Belgium which are not covered in my footprint guide. A must buy for anyone taking a surf trip in Europe. If you're heading outside Europe check out their World guides vol 1 and 2.

We have been long awaiting a book of sweet treats since Ursula's Cakes and Puddings sadly went out of print. This new book has exceded out expectations -not only is it choc full of wonderful puddings and cakes but also icecream (Italian ice creams need we say more-roll on summer and the opportunity to try). Our two favourites in the Books for Cooks cafe are the Farmhouse Apple Cake (has customers clamouring for more) and the Positano Chocolate and Almond cake (the addition of lemon zest to a choclate cake is original and inspired). Delicious !
