I'm sorry to write this, but the recipes I've tried so far haven't worked. I love Anna del Conte's other books but it seems that the recipes in this one haven't been tested enough. Also there are not detailed enough so you have to be quite knowledgeable to succeed. The paintings are lovely though.

I bought this book on a whim whilst on holiday and now find myself reading it from cover to cover. The whole concept is to put the food and the chef in context; the book reads like no other cookery book I have come across. A whole range of ingredients are explained in short essays throughout the book (eg olives, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, parmesan etc). The recipes are split into starters, soups, risotto, fish, meat, pasta and deserts. In amongst the essays and recipes are wonderful photographs and short autobiographical vignettes from Locatelli.

I also have the excellent 'Sliver Spoon', but it is eclipsed by 'Made in Italy'. The former is a huge repository of recipes, listed in exhaustive detail. Locatelli's book on the other ... Read More:

Pictures from Italy is a travelogue by one of the most eminent Victorian writers. It is interesting as it skips the works of art and the architecture of Italian cities ("which can be found in any Baedecker"), and focuses on their inhabitants and their costumes in xix century. The most beautiful pages are those dedicated to Rome, a city very similar to London, as the author points out. Another wonderful four pages are those that describe a dream called Venice as a surrealistic city. By reading his travelogue one learns something about the author of Oliver Twist.

This book is not primarily a history of Italian football but the personal reflections of journalist Paddy Agnew on his years (22, approximately) covering the sport in Italy. Indeed, it is semi-autobiographical with stories of his early days in the country (chapter one) and a non-football chapter on the village of Trevignano (ch. 5), where he lives. Therefore the book has the advantages of observation from within, as Agnew, for example, experienced the political climate under former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (the title is the same as the name of Berlusconi's Political party). Inevitably, the time period covered is mid-80s (when Agnew arrived) to the present. There is a short and interesting history chapter entitled "Mussolini Invents Serie ... Read More:

This is a good guide book, as all the guide books in the series, but I did expect a bit more from it. I travelled around Italy together with my husband the summer of 2005, and we used this guide book a lot. But it is a guide book, nothing more. There are quite a bit of things that have changed since the book was last edited, but this is expected. We are planning to send the findings we did to the editor, so that it can be added or changed in the next edition, perhaps.
We felt that the book focused too much on churches, castles etc, and a lot of really interesting things were missed - like the local food markets, which we love to visit. There wasn't much of "different" or "special" recommendations, it was just focusing on the "What to see if ... Read More:
