The author does't know what he is talking about. His vision of Italy, its politics and Italians is naive. It is never a good idea to generalize about a country and its citizens, especially if someone is not an anthropologist and especially if the description carries a judgement in itself. And if you are not a glottologist it is not wise to interpret the language according to the ethimology of the words without placing the latters in their contemporary context and use. In fact it is the use that makes the language, regardless its origin, especially if we are talking about familiar expressions. The author's vision of Italy and Italians is superficial, and I am only talking about the first chapter. The title of the book presents the book itself ... Read More:

After recently arriving home from a fantastic trip to Florence (Siena and Pisa), I must say how positively useful my husband and I found this guide. It gave us up to date information on the best locations to visit (away from the tourist trail), information on the best times to visit important places of interest (with helpful hints) and, most important of all, where to dine. We didn't have a bad meal! We also found the walks listed, very useful. All in all, this was a fantstic guide and well worth the money! Thanks Lonely Planet!!

Being a tour escort, I am always looking for travel books with a difference. This book by Da Mosto has proved excellent : it may not be very detailed in the description of places but it provides the reader with a lot of useful information from an insider - and what an insider! I only found a little wordy and too personal the sections dedicated to his childhood, but as to the rest, it is beautifully written, with details on unusual facts which you will not find elsewhere and stunning pictures. I loved it.

I have just finished reading this book (the updated edition with Cannavaro lifting the World Cup on the cover.) The author obviously knows his calcio. As a follower of Italian football I found this book to be a very fluid read and allowed me to discover the foundations of the game in Italy, the great teams of the past (Torino, Inter, Genoa, Juventus), the managers and players who helped make the game what is is today, wrapped in an analysis of the social and political context of the country.

I thought the author wrote very well and at a level which would be engaging for the layperson. Of course, when dealing with a history of a subject, it is difficult not to write in a style which some readers might find list-like. I didn't and I'm sure that the vast ... Read More:

I usually travel with LP so maybe I am a little biased but I did find this book up to their normally high standards.

The legendary confusion of Venice's allyways meant I was wary of this book's maps (esp considering LP's less than perfect record in that regard). However I was pleasantly surprised and in 4 days in the city did not get lost using them. It was a little annoying the way they were split across several pages but i guess that was necessary to acheive the accuracy.

The tips to the sights and the walking tours were exellent. The restaurant and shopping sections were ok. I cant comment on the hotels section as I was in an apartment.

The prices (on everything) and some of the transport details were out-of-date.

There has been much great literature written by holocaust survivors, and this one is just about as good as any.

Primo Levi describes in "Survival in Auschwitz" the scheme by which those who could were able to maintain some sort of existance. Those unable to work are gassed, shot or beaten to death. Those who manage to survive are those who find ways to make themselves useful, without actual serioius exertion on the meagre rations. The lifeblood of the camp is "organising" - a black market where a stolen bar of soap is traded for a slice of bread; a potato for a scarf.

One difference between Levi and other Holocaust memoirs, is that he does not rely on an emotional appeal. He produces a trully excellent and insightful disposition of the the psychology ... Read More:
