We used this book for a trip to Umbria with our children ages 9 and 12 and thought it was great, both for the walking and the eating. We have been to Tuscany several times and wanted to branch out to Umbria on this last trip, and can only say we wish we had done so sooner. We stayed in the lovely town of Norcia, and did the "san Eutizio" walk: an amazing adventure with children! Norcia was an easy place to be with kids, the hotel recommended in the book was extremely friendly, the town had such a safe feeling and enough of interest (particularly the gelato bar) to the kids to keep them busy. The walk - one of the longer ones in the book - was an ambitious one for kids, but gave them an exceptional feeling of accomplishment at the end, and they ... Read More:

This is a surprisingly poor book - unusually for Lonely Planet it is split into themes e.g. "eating", "history" rather than places. This makes finding relevant information tedious - not that there is that much really useful information. You might expect the guide to tell you how to get to Rome by train and how long the journey would take - prepare to be disappointed.

The title is also misleading - I bourght the book for a holiday on the Amalfi coast: this area is dealt with in 1 small chapter, and seems to be an after-thourght. The consequence is that I need to buy another book....

Poor effort - I would avoid this book

I've just returned from 5 days in Sicily, where I visited Erice, Agrigento and Palermo and some other parts of the west coast.

For these areas, I found the book very useful and informative, in particular the Palermo section. As usual it was set out well and was easily to use. I imagine the other sections are just as useful.

The only thing it didn't mention was that while it might be the best beach in Sicily, the rocks behind are yielded some of our major break throughs in understanding climate change!

I would reccomend this book and prefer the layout to the rough guides I have used for other places in the past

This is a wonderful book for all those who are passionate about Venice. Presented with great style, it is certainly up to the standard of Franceso's previous publications. But this is not just a book of traditional recipes and pretty photographs, many pages are devoted to the produce used in Venetian cooking and the history of various ingredients. There are pages describing 18th. century life in the palazzi of Venice and four pages devoted to the humble fork. This is a book that will transport you to the Grand Canal everytime you read it. Oh if only all trattoria and ristorante in Venice had a copy!

The image of Italy, in a time of gentle romance falls from the page. It is as refreshing as a glass of crisp white wine, while bathing in the evening sun. The characters are at one time seperate holiday makers and a collective changing of attitudes to others and to themselves. On the face of it, it is a book about four women who go on holiday together but in fact it is about taking chnaces no matter how small or big.
It is the perfect book for anyone who has been in love with a place and a person at the same time and will be again.

Since I was introduced to Alastair Sawday's books & website about 2 years ago I have never looked back. As per previous publications 'Italy' did not fail to live up to its title of 'Special Places'. I have spent a number of evenings traveling, in my mind, through the wonderful countryside, city & coast of Italy with Sawdays as my guide.

Sawday's is just wonderful as it gives you a very informed idea of each place and depending on what you are looking for there is always something to please. As always the book is perfectly laid out and very easy to use - it was also great to see the green emphasis of the book. I have recommended Sawday's to family & friends and will continue to do so.

Italy was always on my short ... Read More:

This is the accompanying book to the TV series, but so much more too!

Firstly, the book is replete with stunning photography by John Parker. These in themselves are enough to merit applause, but Francesco's text is a good read and full of personal insight. He clearly is no lightweight historian, but has delved deeply into his own and his city's past.

The book is in five chapters (one more than the TV series) with titles that explain much of the subject they contain: 1. "Water - From the Waters to the City"; 2. "Earth - The Boundaries of Land Enlarge"; 3. "Air - La Serenissima Evaporates"; 4. "Fire - Venice Burns Its Past"; and 5. "Ether - Life under Uncertainty".

There is a healthy dose of scepticism adopted by the author ... Read More:

This book is really good for those who wish to explore and look beyond Nice itself. I have purchased a number of books on the City and the surrounds because we visit Nice on a regular basis and this is an excellent addition to those more standard guide books.
