Funny how this book makes you ponder the worth of buying an old Vespa, even though you know you won't It also makes you think seriously about buying a heap of Kinder Surprises. Dozens? Hundreds? Well enough to ensure you get one with a green Vespa in it.
The Eye-ties should market this book, a great magnet to draw tourists to the Italian countryside, although I suspect that job has been done already by Maye and co. This though, would make a better film than Maye's 'Under the Tuscan Sun'. It combines romance, roads, red wine and quirky characters. Reading it, on the other side of the world in July, is a good way to shake off the cold and drab winter. Dunno if I'll ever do the Vespa ride - I like modern engines that don't break down ... I want to see more stars against this book, which is why I am typing this review. Having lived in Italy, I was searching for an authentic Italian cookbook and when this book was given to me by a discerning friend, I knew I had found what I was looking for. It is a real delight...so full of useful tips ...not just about the process of cooking the recipes but about the ingredients themselves. It is the book every Italian mother should hand on to her daughter! Those readers who may be put off by the lack of photos of the actual recipes should think again...Mary's recipes are delicious and foolproof. Italy on a plate! I struggled for years making my own pasta using the instructions which came with the (Italian) machine....but once I followed ... Read More:

If you really want to know what you're looking at when you visit Rome, this book is a must for your suitcase! It is brisk, erudite, academic but highly accessible and fascinating. The layout is useful, too, with introductions relating to the building materials and general history. I was given it for Christmas so had plenty of time to read it before we went to Rome in March for a wonderful six days. It hugely contributed to my enjoyment of this fantastic city, where there is little interpretation of the archaeology on the ground, as it were, with a complete lack of signs, identification and interpretation. You still need a tourist guide book to get you to the sites, though, as there is no overall map of the city in the book, guiding you to where stuff ... Read More:

great book as it covers not just Verona but some of the cities and towns nearby, like lake garda. There was so much backround history about the area, which is quite good when most of the signs are in italian, french and german! Also has an excellent section on restaurants and cafes, again not only in Verona but the surrounding areas. We had such a great time with this book, as we passed it between us saying "do you know that...?" as we went round some of the places in the book. Its also great to syche yourself up before the trip.

This is a gem of a book! Witty, engrossing and erudite (It taught me more of the geography of ancient Rome than any other "general" overview I have read.
The author has managed to blend all the various changes from the early republic to late empire into one coherent overview of life in Rome. Simply a must buy book.
