I found the book very fascinating and useful, the best "entrance door" if you want to go on studying Japanese, and a nice reading if you just want to know a little bit more about Japanese culture. It makes you learn the most important kanji in the easiest and funnniest way, better than many more expensive and difficult book.

Well, I'm only a beginner in Japanese, but this particular book's had it for me. Either my Japanese teacher (a native Japanese) does not know jack about Japanese or the authors of this book forgot to remind readers to 'handle it with care'. I mean, do not believe the equivalents given in either of the parts of the dictionary. Although it seems that the English-Japanese version is slightly better or should I say a bit more reliable, they are both quite out-of-the-context and thus you should not rely on them unless you have consulted some other sources.

I am very happy to own Oxford Japanese mini dictionary. I am a beginner in Japanese and started studying three months ago. I really needed a simple and clear Japanese dictionary with basic beginner's vocabulary. This dictionary has everything I need for my current studying. I thought 8 pounds was a bit expensive but there was no anything more suitable and I don't regret it. The dictionary itself is small enough to be carried in a pocket, it has a very nice introduction and "how to use this dictionary" section. Authors warn beginners against copying complicated kanji and use hiragana instead. There is no romaji, all words are written in hiragana and katakana (relatively easy and intermediate kanjis are written along). This is very helpful ... Read More:

Despite its small size, this book covers topics glossed over by supposedly more complete references. For example, plenty of colloquial and informal verb forms are covered, and the last chapter is a reference of various idiomatic expression that take a verb base. The book does have some downsides, though. Most of it is structured in a way more fitting for a guide than a reference. It takes the typical constructive approach of building verb forms starting with the base, useful for composing Japanese text, but less useful to a beginning student who would probably be more interested in reading, and would benefit from a deconstructive approach.
