Already beyond the point of saying I live in X location, have a cat and a dog, have been there/not been there, x is better than y, like X food... discussing abstract ideas, opinion, politics and sciences can be very tricky despite having studied all the essential grammar. When talking with Japanese ESL students the flow of conversation is constantly interrupted by a lack of vocabulary. Initially "How to Sound Intelligent in Japanese" sounds more like a gimmick for those who want to quickly show off without understanding the meaning of what they are saying. I went for a job subbing, I don't have a degree in journalism and I hadn't worked directly on a magazine. I got the job! And I think it was in part due to the no-fuss, comprehensive information in this book. It tells you everything you need to know, and reassured me that I do have the skills to get the job done. It also improved my knowledge in areas I don't know so much about, like libel law and the magazine production cycle. If you think you might want to be a sub, other books will list for you what a sub does; this one tells you what you will be doing in great detail. It was just what I needed and is very easy to read.

A book for moderate-intermediate learners, although beginners can benefit also. But a knowledge of the Japanese language and the writing system would really help. It has examples in kanji/kana then romanji and then in english ; so you learn some kana /kanji through the book. However, it is better for brushing up on your kanji/kana rather than a source for learning it. I found this phrasebook really useful. It was small enough to put in my bag and I used it everyday. Even when I could not pronounce certain things I would just show whomever I needed help from and they understood straightaway. It has both English and Japanese dictionary and it came in handy when I fell ill and had to go to the doctors. This is great for anyone who is going to Japan for the first time.
