A generally well organised primer for those planning to take French to a serious level. The book is well laid out and the explainations are for the most part very clear. There are one or two errors in the book (for example in the list of impersonal clauses that take the subjunctive - I hasten to add that my native French speaking teacher identified these, not me), but not significant enough to devalue it. The cross referencing is a little patchy in places and some of the exercises on the dry side, but then since when was grammar supposed to be fun! The section on verb usage is mostly excellent but the section on pronouns would benefit from expansion and clearer examples. Overall though, a very good buy.

I bought this book after reading the reviews on here because I have discovered recently that I have a really strong interest in writing. I'd always thought writing was for a particular sort of person, the very talented, super-creative sorts who have characters and plots falling out of their ears. This book helped me to see that writing is for anyone who has the desire to write and that if you fancy having a go you should go for it. The first few chapters had me laughing out loud with tears rolling down my face. It was such good fun, not a serious text book at all yet getting many serious points across. I have come late to English having only just scraped a pass at O level 35 years ago. I was sitting on a plane and saw someone on the seat opposite the aisle reading this book. From the little I could see it looked interesting and at the end of the flight when he stopped reading, I fortunately glimpsed the cover as he put it away. I was then straight onto Amazon and located it. This is a wonderful book, incredibly illuminating and authoritative but at the same time straightforward and attention gripping. However it's not for the faint-hearted having many, many pages of small text. It took me several months to read cover to cover - but I'm glad I did...

I bought this book 5 weeks prior to beginning a sign language course. It takes some commitment to keep picking up this book and learning productively (I used people to test me on 10-20 signs per day) but it has proved an invaluable introduction to signing. One thing to be aware of - not that this is a criticism of the book - is that regional adaptations to signs may require you to alter what you see in this book. Overall, a great headstart to learning sign language. 5 thumbs up.

I am so pleased to have found this book again, I used to own it once before and enjoyed its easy style but I gave it away to a South American friend who was learning English (she loves it!). This book is so expertly executed that even if you have only a modest level of Spanish, it will strengthen what you've already got, provide you with new words and encourage you onto more. It's set around 18 stories or myths or folklores from Spain's past, starting with the oldest first and working towards the newest last, with the Spanish and English presented on facing pages. I bought this book on the basis of the review by another Amazon reader. He sounded like he was doing what I wanted to do - acquire reading skills. And he is right - this is an excellent reader. There's a wide range of stories and the translations on the opposite page are excellent. There is also an extensive vocabulary at the back and questions so you don't need a dictionary with you. There are brief introductions to each author, in English. It is excellent value for money and the language is sufficiently difficult to challenge anyone with reasonable skills in French but not so difficult as to make the task impossible. My level was just post O level (I didn't do A level but I had done an extra year of conversation). But I haven't ... Read More:

Before buying this book you need to ask yourself just one question. What are my language goals? If you want to pass a GSCE exam or have something to use for reference on holiday, then you can buy a much cheaper, smaller and lighter dictionary that will do the trick just fine. However, if you want to be an advanced Spanish learner, then you'll need a substantial dictionary, and this is the best I've come across, having tried several previous dictionaries of varying sizes. One problem I have had in the past with dictionaries is the lack of words. This has over 300,000 words and thus realistically covers all the words that even an advanced learner would ever need. Unlike many of Chomsky's other political books this one is somewhat easier to read and the points it gets across are lucidly put It is also short and would make an excellent introduction to his work and ideas
