Most people aren't crazy about this book but have to buy it because it is required- in other words, people buy this book because they have to use the format and style it discusses in order to write and submit a paper. Other than that, I don't know who else would go out of their way to buy this thing. It's thick and not thumb indexed the best. Other psychological books readers may benefit from include The Sixty-Second Motivator.

This is a brilliant little book covering a vast array of subjects in great detail, but nowhere does it give any help on pronunciation, which could make the user less understandable in practice. Some hints or tips on pronunciation at the beginning, or pronunciations in phonetics would take this little book from fab to phenomenal!

Having a copy of the King James Bible and copy of the William Tyndale version of the New Testament, I was very interested to find out where the English language as we know it came from. This book did not dissappoint me. It took me right from the Anglo Saxon and Norse of the six century, which made up Old English, right through to the Modern English that we all speak today and how it is spoken in the former colonies of the British Empire. It is very well written and very informative. I enjoyed a great deal the chapters about the influence of French on our language under William the Conquerer, and how increased trade in the Middle Ages and William Shakespeare helped turn the Middle English of William Tyndale into the Early Modern English of ... Going abroad? May be to France or England - but you do not know any French, is that it? Well now your worries are all over with this book: The Collins French Dictionary! Now, it is in colour so it is even better and easier to use! Also, it has a phrasefinder to make it a lot simpler for travellers. Half of this book is French to English and the remaining half is the other way around! So you can be French and go to England or vice versa. It was ever so useful when I went to Paris! It is part of the Collins Gems books which is a series and it includes Whales and Dolphins, Stars, Spiders, Babies Names, Superstitions, Cats, Flags, The Collins Spanish Dictionary and The Collins German Dictionary. All of these are all pocket sized which makes each book even better!

I have been teaching French to adult beginners using this book for the past two/three years and I think it is very good with the right support. I cannot see that one can learn French from scratch with it, but then I don't believe anyone can learn a language with a book and a cd pack only. It uses very practical language and by the end of the book my students are confident enough to go to France and have a good basic conversation with French people.

It's difficult to find good Spanish authors suitable for beginners. The idea behind this book is good. Short stories with the Spanish text translated on the opposite page. This makes it easy to progress through the story without losing too much momentum. The translations are quite good. I found the stories a bit boring. It appears that in an effort to find reputable authors of good literature, the editors sacrificed more potentially interesting stories with actual events. The stories are often long-winded and slow with no great drama. They didn't maintain my interest beyond an exercise in grammar and vocabulary building. This is probably the worse course book I have ever seen. The audio bounces around the chapters so it is very difficult to follow the audio. They introduce new words without giving examples to whether it is der die or das. For all you teachers out there, this may seem quite adequate (as most teachers seem to have an elitist attitude), but for us students this is a real pain in the rear! You have to keep referring to the glossary, which really takes the fun out of learning German. As all you are really learning is now to navigate the glossary efficiently. Well, as you can imagine, by the fifth time of flipping to the glossary you're getting bored and you end up wondering off to do something more interesting. Brought this book after having a particularly bad experience in a mock exam. So glad I did, condenses everything down into manageable chunks and cuts the rubbish out which some guides have. The result in getting this was two As on the exam modules at AS and improved grades in the following year. Hopefully this will help me to success later on in the year!

I do admit that this book, and other similar titles by the same author, have some value. I believe that they also prove popular. However, I would like to express my view that they really are of limited use. If you are a beginner and new to BSL this book can be a good study aid and reminder to things covered in class - but it certainly is NO replacement for attending a BSL class! I also think that even beginners will soon out grow this book. If you are serious about BSL and plan to keep on learning,It has more information than most signers will ever want to know!
