On a trip to China I ordered this phrasebook as I have absolutely no knowledge of Mandarin and was told China was quite difficult to get around in due to the low level of English spoken over there. In truth, at places like airports staff there will speak English and signs will be written in English. In Beijing airport I was even able to ask a janitor a question in English and he understood me. In more rural China (specifically I went to Fujian province) it's very unlikely that you'll come across someone that can speak English, but places still have some signs in English. Can someone tell me if this book has accents to show where the stress falls on a word? I have used "Oxford Take Off in Russian", which does have these accents, and found it very good, if a bit thin. So I bought another book Basic "Russian: A Grammar and Workbook", but the lack of accents renders it virtually useless for self-study. Thanks

I actually found this bok rather confusing. Especially when it came to the verb section. So much information not fully explained in an easy enough way! A much better book is the practice makes perfect series.

It is written as if the theoretical problems with the idea of the auteur, grand narratives, identity, otherness, the ego, Freud and Jung had never existed. It has a latent Christianity (at least a latent religiosity), homophobia and puritanism which, in this post-modern, liberal age seems disturbingly Victorian, transparently prejudiced and disqualifies the author from making the kinds of universalising claims that he makes about certain texts. Don't we live in an age of pluralism where simple binary distinctions such as 'light and dark' don't necessarily apply to people, stories, places and events? This book is very good both for the teacher and the student. I can photocopy explanations for my students because the tenses are explained very clearly and the photocopiable section is easily adapted for use with many activities. I would recommend this book to TEFL/TESOL students and to ESOL teachers.

I am currently doing my finals and this book was recommended by our university as the best around. I couldn't possibly disagree more. Many of us are in total agreement that it is overcomplicated and difficult to use in pretty much every sense. The index is useless, I'll give you an example...was looking today to revise the use of lequel/lesquels etc so went to the page given and it was a short section on their use in questions. To find the actual section you had to turn to relative pronouns - something that anybody starting out would not have the first idea about. Better grammar books would deal with any topic all at once rather than having one section on page 5 and the other on 205. I have seen several books on egyptian heiroglyphs and I have to say this is the best one for beginners by far. Collier takes the reader step by step through the maze which is ancient egyptian language. It explains how to tell which order to read them, how to decipher with relation to context as well as many excercises after each chapter to ensure you can put into practice what you have learnt. For anyone looking to learn this is the book for you!

I couldn't do languages at school, wasn't bad at other things, but with languages I always had a kind of block in the brain. But having a partner and his family who spoke French made me try to learn as an adult, and this has truly helped me. I'm not going to tell you that I'm suddenly fluent, but listening to this CD made me realise that I could do it. I learnt the whole CD after several listenings and felt a real achivement, and it spurred me on to learn more (I went onto Michel Thomas who is great). I'm actually enjoying language learning now which I didn't before, and it was because this CD made French accessible to me, if not providing a huge range of vocab. I'll keep this short as it need only be short. I wanted to learn Dutch from scratch. I had no experience with Germanic languages and so was at the mercy of this book to guide me, and it has done exactly that. It is an excellent book in all respects : the content is useful, practical and realistic, the grammar is introduced constantly at the right pace and with clear explanation, the vocabulary is extensive and not always confined to turgid and overdone topics as in other books (not always, I emphasise, there is always an element of this whatever book you choose) and finally the presentation is excellent. 6 months after I purchased this and worked through half of it, I went to the Netherlands and was shocked at how much of the book was actually useful in real life - that is ...
