I am surprised at the negative feedback here. As a consistent user of Lonely Planet guides, I have to say that this ranked as one of the more useful country guides i have come across. Writing guidebooks must be a very tricky business - it is necessary to include such a vast quantity of information, while trying simultaneously to capture the feel and mood of a country in such a way that people know what to expect back home. This particular guide does an excellent job in this respect.

I spent one month travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town, taking a winding route through Swaziland and Lesotho. I had no schedule and went where I wanted when I wanted. And perhaps it is for this kind of travelling that this guide is most suitable - it ... Read More:

This book's a reasonable guide, but is eclipsed by the brilliantly written and hugely informative Bradt Guide. We took both books to Ethiopia (09/2006) and found the Bradt one to be far superior.

Took this book on our Honeymoon to Bali in September. Absolutely essential tool for finding the huge number of hidden treasures. We were at Nusa Dua which was poorly covered, but bare in mind that the Lonely books are for your globe trotting surfer.
But the rest of the island was very well covered and gave some great detail on the main attractions.
The Island guide was very useful giving details of local customs and amenities.
Would make sure this is in your pocket when you go.
A few tips
1. Watch the "helpers" at the airport, they will swamp you at the conveyor and fleece you for the pleasure of carrying your bag. Just say no.
2. If you are at one of the big resorts/ hotel complexes, hire you first taxi through ... Read More:

As most Lonely Planet guide books I have read, this has also been of great help to me. It really increased my joy of expectations. And they were fulfilled.
I love to really study my guide book weeks in advance of my departure. If I am going away on the spur of the moment and I do not have time for thorough study, I usually by another guide book, besides the Lonely Planet guide, for getting the quick overview and use the Lonely Planet guide for a reference book (looking-up things).
I only give it 4 stars as the map maybe could be a little bit better.

The first edition was rather better. It was better laid out and easier to read. The typeface in the new edition is smaller, the maps are smaller, and my subjective impression is that material on the main sites, Leptis and Sabratha, is less extensive than it was. Frankly it should be rather more extensive! Otherwise it is reasonably up to the standard of most such guides, although I concur with the reviewer who said that it's erroneous in parts.

My first impression was that the author had been 'got at' by the Libyan authorities. I particularly noticed the omission of comments about hotels that would throw you out of your room unless you agreed to buy their foul-tasting evening meals have gone, for instance; or mention of sleepy officials ... I took this book with me when I visited Russia for the first time with absolutely zero knowledge of Russian. This book was invaluable! Due to the nature of the Russian language, being one that is spelt as it is spoken, I was using words and phrases from this book and being mistaken for a local! The problem was I could not understand the responses I got many times, but that is not a fault of the book.

The book also lists words and phrases in Cyrillic, which means it's extremely easy to learn to read in Russia and I was able to read nearly all of the Cyrllic alphabet within the day!

On my journey on the Trans-Siberian railway I shared my carriage with a native Russian from Omsk. He had only a bare basic understanding of English from ... Read More:

Here's a practical guidebook that isn't dry and boring!

It includes plenty of detailed info on places to see & things to do, and it's written in a lively hip style for an easy read & reference.

As an adopted local, I can tell that the tips on what to do have been thoroughly researched and tested. What's inside? You might learn about the Lavender Festivals with their colourful parades and floats, but the book will also let you in on how to discover fragrant lavender-strewn hills with a donkey, or with a bike. You'll learn about the Via Ferrata of Haute-Provence. You'll experience the scents of Grasse flowery perfumes. You'll read about the Top 5 St Tropez legendary beaches.
The highlighted activities are geared toward ... Read More:

This book proved to be a lifesaver for me. It is extremely well set out, and sub-divided for ease of use. It includes sections that cover areas you are likely to come across on a day-to-day basis such as 'greetings', 'at the market', 'at the post office' and 'emergencies', to name but a few. But as well as useful phrases, it also gives a summary of the chapter explaining in more detail the way of life. For example, before the section on shopping, there is a paragraph covering the art of bartering, and before the 'eating out' section, Moroccan hospitality is explained so the reader is in the know when he arrives at the restaurant or the guest's house. As well as there being a transliteration of the Arabic script with an easy-to-use pronunciation guide to ... Read More:
