Found the book a very handy reference for the journey - interesting and well written, with a good deal of practical detail, great value recommendations. Excellent coverage of both cities and more remote areas. The author's own fascination with the country is very contagious. Highly recommended.

This book is very predictable - formula-written. Like it is by a committee not a person.

LP's great when you first start traveling. But now I want more information about the places that locals go to and the more unusual locations, hotels and restaurants.

With this book you know you are always with the crowd whether you want it or not.

And the cultural information is very thin and unimaginative. The only thing that is really good are the maps and the great binding.

After using the Lonely Planet's 'South East Asia on a Shoestring' I was sceptical of buying another of LP's guides. However for some reason I found myself with 'Central America on a Shoestring' and it actually turned out to be a very handy travel companion. The information was up to date (probably as we somehow managed to be one of the first people to get our hands on it) and the writers remained nicely neutral to cater for various ages and travel desires. Definitely recommended.

I did most of the French side this summer and found it to be spot on. You could be travelling to a town/city by train and reading about your destination, when you get there its totally like the descriptions in the book. Theres lots of background info on Swiss soceity/culture which helps you to chat with the locals by knowing their frame of reference.

If you want a good holiday in Switzerland you have to travel around and see the natural sights, this book is great for planning your itinery.

Only flaw I spotted was I was walking on a bridge in Bern that wasn't on the LP map and was lost for about 2 minutes.

If visiting, its best to buy this before you travel so you can do a day by day plan. I did and it ran very ... Read More:

I have mixed feelings about this guide.

In terms of practicality, it's small and not too heavy for carrying around - but is still bigger than many other city guides available. The maps are quite useful although their scale can make a short walk look like a ten mile hike! The maps are also all located at the back and there are no maps integrated into the text, apart from one of the castle. This made it awkward as you needed to flick back and forth. Close ups of the most famous and crowded areas, like the Old Town Square, would have been useful.

Despite being published in 2007, there are some inaccuracies and the selection of shops, hotels etc. mentioned seems to miss out many of the more recent developments. It also often ... Read More:

Always been a very big fan of Lonely Planet guides... they have helped me round India, Nepal, Pakistan, France, Italy and Ireland. As my old copy is pre-Euro I thought I'd get a new up to date copy. Wish I hadn't. I've been looking at the Paris section... we are taking our children and I was interested in Parc d'Asterix... no mention. Several pages on Disney. Lots of other destinations on our 'tick list' are missing.

Nice photography as ever, and the usual clear concise style. I realise they cna't put everything in the guide but these are major omissions. Not recommended. Sorry Lonely Planet!

Despite an unusually high number of flaws, this is nevertheless a book that will help you get the most out of your time in Andalucia.

Perhaps I just expect too much of Lonely Planet (LP), but it's their own fault. They've stood by me so many times in so many different places in the past that I was beginning to take everything they told me as The Only Advice In Town. So when I arrived in Seville I quickly got into the LP groove and hit La Bella Estrella, a "jazz bar".

Well, perhaps I'd arrived the day they buried the proprietor, but there was no jazz going on there, so off I went to Naima Café Jazz, happily only about five doors away down Calle Trajan. A bit better, but still not the place I expected based on LP's ... Read More:

I've just spent three months travelling round Sri Lanka with both the Rough Guide and the Lonely Planet guide. I have to say, that the Rough Guide proved, on almost all counts, to be the much better option.

Obviously neither guide is perfect - the Rough Guide is excellent on the South coast, but not so good when you travel further north, and both guides fail to give much useful information (or the correct information!) about how to travel around by public bus. However, the Lonely Planet guide is pretty inaccurate throughout. Many of the maps are wrong, for instance, and it fails to actually give a balanced view of whether place is worth visiting. Even if some people might consider the Rough Guide to be too negative, I found that it was quite ... Read More:

50.Mandarin Phrasebook (Lonely Planet Phrasebook) by: Anthony Garnaut

On a trip to China I ordered this phrasebook as I have absolutely no knowledge of Mandarin and was told China was quite difficult to get around in due to the low level of English spoken over there.

In truth, at places like airports staff there will speak English and signs will be written in English. In Beijing airport I was even able to ask a janitor a question in English and he understood me. In more rural China (specifically I went to Fujian province) it's very unlikely that you'll come across someone that can speak English, but places still have some signs in English.

Following on from my previous point, the writing system will pose a problem and is one this book cannot solve, not that it aims to. Rather you will just have to be ... Read More:
