Elvis and the Memphis Mafia is a book easily capable of satisfying Elvis fans - the strength of this book lies in the sheer amount of fresh information and the simple approach with which it's delivered. The book is basically comprised of transcribed conversations with the "Memphis Mafia" - Elvis' famed band of associates that were with the Rock `n' Roll superstar throughout most of his amazing career. I brought this book when i was home in oxford england for the plane ride Back to the USA.
I could not put it down.
Ive always had an intereast in the twins and being an Ex pat Brit you find things much more intreasting when you can relate being from the same background.
American organized crime is written about very much in fact their is thousands of books to read about the mafia.

This book is about Reg and his time locked up for 30 years not so much about the twins heyday in the 60s.
Reg talks about the highs and lows of his time inside and about the cruel way the authorities play with your mind.
The prisons in general seem not to be intreasted in rehab but only interested in breaking men and their spirits. ... Read More:

Having read Mr Nice a few years ago, which I found very enjoyable, I decided to give this one a go. The book was interesting and well written but shows Howard Marks to be not quite as 'nice' as he comes across in his own book.
Unlike the thoughts of some other reviewers, Judy does not to me come across as compassionate and warm at all! She has never worked a day in her life, preferring it would seem, to live off her husband's criminal earnings.
She does love her kids and tries to do her best for them and at one part in the book, describes her disgust at finding that friends of her husband had hidden drugs in her house putting herself and the children in danger. This struck me as ironic, given that she expresses no shame at all in any part of the book, ... Read More:

25.Underboss: Sammy the Bull Gravano's Story of Life in the Mafia by: Peter Maas

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Underboss: Sammy the Bull Gravano's Story of Life in the Mafia
This is an interesting look at the mob from someone who was a made member of the Cosa Nostra. Sammy the Bull Gravano is no angel and he pulls no punches, as he regales the reader with his tale of growing up on the mean streets of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn as the dyslexic son of Italian immigrants. A high school drop-out, Sammy graduated from local street gangs to the Cosa Nostra, taking a blood oath of silence. So much for promises.

This book is a series of taped interviews that are edited by the author, who interposes little analysis but serves to connect the dots. The feel of the book is gritty, and Sammy the Bull Gravano comes across as a reasonably intelligent person who made a knowing choice early on to enter into a lifestyle that was fraught with murder, ... 26.Gomorrah: Italy's Other Mafia by: Roberto Saviano

Books : Gomorrah: Italy's Other Mafia
I read this book before retiring to bed over several nights. I found it hard to put down, yet each time I turned the page I thought the narrative might pick up, become more personal and lead me somewhere more satisfying. Is it me? Do I lack that bit of inside information that would help me digest and put more clarity to the situation? The information came at you wholesale, floods of it...names, places, so many names and places, complicated by my lack of knowledge of places and probably politics, background and pronunciation. So many killings...don't get me wrong, I loved it and recommend it ...yet it left me wanting just that little bit more explanation. All the while I was reading the book I was constantly nagged by the question...what was Saviano's perspective on all this whilst ... Read More:

28.Donnie Brasco: Unfinished Business by: Joe Pistone
June 05, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Donnie Brasco: Unfinished Business
This is a readable book which goes into some detail about things not covered in the original work. It also shows just what courage and dedicaiton Joe Pistone had in working undercover in describing some events he did not include in the original work. The book goes on to give an insiders account of the trials he was a witness for (and plenty for which he was not) and discusses some of the tactices the FBI used to ensure convictions. It also covers what became of him in his career after he was revealed to be an agent (and the FBI does not smell of roses here). In all an interesting read, though at times it is a little difficult to follow as he writes extensivly about every major mafia trial from the early 1980's onwards and sometimes it is difficult to follow who he is talking about and what ...
