Books : Inside the Firm: The Untold Story of the Krays' Reign of Terror
I purchased this book in a second hand book store. It is a very interesting read and highly recommended for a rainy day indoors. Tony Lambrianou displays himself as a wronged man. He had a hard childhood and spent the rest of his life making other people suffer for it.
He enjoyed beating people and being violent. He really believed himself to be highly respected!!!! believing you could "earn" respect, by kicking someone in the face. He also considered himself " a good catholic" although he never went to church and did everything a "Good Catholic" should do, like murdering people, maiming, threatening and of course stealing, not to mention lying.

In my mind he was nothing but a disgusting parasite, stealing and taking by force ... Read More:

Bookshops seem to be teeming with gangster and crime memoirs these days. If you want to try and sift through the distinctly average books then I would definitely recommend Eddie Richardson's 'The last word'. Eddie Richardson is honest and does not go out of his way to prove that he is some kind of hard man and neither does he seem to have been bothered about obtaining any 'gangster' image although neither did he shy away from it. It is not so much of a gangland book, more the story of a man who has seen the best of life and the worst of life. Certainly it does not seek to glorify criminal activities and paints a very stark picture of life in prison during the 60s and 70s. He tells stories that are sad such as the death of his brother, Alan, ... Read More:

I don't agree with the reviewer who said this is the true story of 'what really went on'. Charlie Kray spends most of the book justifying himself and moaning about how he was wrongly convicted, both in the Old Bailey trial with the twins in the 1960s, and later for his drug trafficking (in the latter case, he insists he was only joking in his taped deals with the police and he never had the wherewithal to really carry things through - if you believe that, you'll believe anything!) It always amazes me that people can write an autobiography and skirt round or duck out of the areas they don't like! Charlie is no exception. However, I found it very difficult to put this book down. It kept me gripped from beginning to end, mainly because I have read John ... Read More:

If you are now in your 30s or 40s then you need this book to remind yourself what you got up in your party years of the 80s and 90s.
If you are in your teens or 20s then read what you missed out on - it will never be repeated.
Urban Smuggler gets right to the core of the underground drug culture that gave rise to and fuelled the dance scene, a hands-on tale of one man riding the 'rave wave' and cashing in on the seemingly chaotic and spontaneous world that grew around him.
Inevitably it could never last forever but you will be shocked, appalled, and amazed by just what followed. What a great book and I hear there's a film on the way too. Enjoy.

I was interested to read about such an enigmatic figure as Tam McGraw, having heard so many others holding forth on the subject (Reg McKay, Paul Ferris et al). I was hoping that this book would cast some light on McGraw's shadowy world. However, the book is largely pre-occupied with smuggling operations undertaken by the Tartan Mafia back in the 90s, with occasional allusions to McGraw's involvement.

There are some interesting anecdotes, though they must be taken with a pinch of salt considering the sources. Unfortunately there are some extensive grey areas. For example, Paul Ferris is rarely mentioned, which considering recent events is unusual. The tone of the book is sympathetic toward McGraw and his henchmen, leaving one with a sense of some ... The perverse pursuit of the terrible twin peaks of power and pleasure has, from time immemorial, driven human beings to engage in truly astonishing flights of creative genius, not least with regard to matters financial. Aficionados of the money launderer's art will find much to engage them in The Washing Machine as Nick Kochan, the distinguished investigative journalist, cruelly and clinically strips away not only the glittering corporate faade of many an august institution to reveal the greedy, cynical inner launderer, but also the glittering Armani suit of many a Mafiosi cash smuggler to reveal the commodiously customised inner boxer shorts.
Kochan takes absolutely no prisoners in this pitiless forensic dissection of the modus operandi of both primary and secondary ... Read More:

Moises Naim's "Illicit" represents a good attempt to provide a (rather general) overview of the main types of illicit trade. Unfortunately, the book does not go beyond the overview-level. It is way too superficial and lacks depth. A disappointment...
