194.A Tuscan Childhood by: Kinta Beevor

Books : A Tuscan Childhood
I bought this book in Siena when my husband and I were on holiday. The Beevor name caught my eye because I'd met Anthony Beevor a few times in his army days though I didn't know him at all well. Really, I bought the book out of a sort of curiosity because of that very vague association and then I was absorbed by Kinta Beevor herself. She has a truly great author's gift for evoking times, people, places without strain or effort. The gift of direct and uncomplicated story-telling isn't given to many but she had it. There is no patronising in her accounts of the people she knew then and there is no over-romanticising of the life they all led. I doubt it can be bettered as a history of its particular period in Italy.

This is also one of my favourite recipe books. The recipes seem abit overwheming at first but the more I look at it, the more I discover ones to make! My favourites are lentil and chorizo stew and spinach and chickpeas. The good thing about the recipes is that although they say 'for 4 tapas' they create a large amount of food (the stew does 4-5 main meal portions and the prawn and apinach loaf was a big loaf tin's worth.(not eating it again for a while)) There are good recipes for bbqs and outdoor summer eating, as well as the hearty winter fare! There's also the sense that the next time you're in spain you can check out the tapas bars without them being out of your league!!! I've bought my salt cod for the salt ... Read More:

Books : The Harry's Bar Cookbook
As a cook and literary buff, I always thought of Harry's Bar in Venice as a monument that has provided me with great inspiration.

Tucked away on a corner not far from St Mark's Square, it is quite small with low ceilings but with an incredible view of the Grand Canal from its first floor. The decor is very relaxing with small comfortable chairs and tables in pleasant shades of apricot and cream. Upon opening the doors, you immediately drink in the atmosphere that is intimate, worldly, historically rich and alive.

I remember the first time I visited Harry's bar twenty-five years ago. I went to this legendary bar, made famous by Ernest Hemingway, after having promised myself that I would only have a drink. I knew the prices ... Read More:
