Firstly, this is a far from comprehensive view of the war, as some reviewers have pointed out. Then again, with a conflict as big and sprawling (and as heavily reasearched and written about) as WW2, we can hardly be surprised by this. What the author does do is bring together some very interesting analysis to parts of the war often overlooked, and comes to some quite interesting conclusions.

The analysis that bears the most fruit is that of the economies of WW2, and the contrast between the Axis and Allied powers in how they understood what Total War meant. For the Axis powers, they didn't get it. Germany is a good example - lauded for the technical sophistication of its blitzkrieg forces, it failed decisively to understand that ... Read More:

Colin Gray is my lecturer on War, Peace and International Relations, and I can't speak highly enough of him. So although I may be biased, his book is as clear and concise and adept at explaining complex concepts and observations as he is in person. This book gives a highly insightful perception of War Peace and IR.

I think this book was quite interesting and made me feel very sad at the end. It is good but it also is not very engaging and it was rather boring in parts. I bought it after studying it for A level English and even though i thought it was ok, it is not one of the best books that i have read.

I am not a huge fan of motor racing, but despite this I enjoyed the first chapters of the book which is mostly about the early lives and racing careers of the saboteurs. The author really brings the people to life and makes the reader care about them.
Once he starts writing about their SOE activities the book comes to life. He must have done an enormous amount of research, because, despite reading many, many books on the SOE, I found a lot of new information.
Excellently researched.

Now and again there comes a book, that when the individual finally finishes and lays it down, a moment of serious thought is required. This is one of those books. I know little about the White Rose and this book adequately serves the purpose. I now have nothing but the utmost respect for these people and what they attempted to do. One can't but help think, 'would I do the same in a similar situation?'. Read and respect.

When the German army invaded Paris in 1940, Agnes Humbert a strong minded, politically aware art historian, immediately knew that she had to 'do something', the thought of accepting the invasion was anathema to her and she helped to form one of the first organised groups of the French Resistance. The speed with which this was set up and began to operate was staggering. She had excellent contacts and friends in literary and journalistic circles and an underground newspaper, combating the German propaganda machine, was printed and circulated around Paris. It was simply amazing that they managed to keep this going and out of the hands of the authorities for nearly a year before they were betrayed and she was arrested and thrown into prison. Seven of the men who founded ... Read More:

The first time I read this book I coudlnt put it down (Apart from two incidents described that made me feel sick and forced me to close it). I have just finished reading it for the second time and although I still find it a great read I couldnt help feel parts of it were poorly written. Perhaps this is beacuse this isn't the full version translated from the german original or its just down to the skill of the author. In parts it reads like extremely grim fiction (almost cliche) rather than a first hand account of the front line and gives the feeling that the author has taken a few liberties here and there. After reading it again I have found myself asking questions about the validty of some parts. weather this is due to something being lost in the translation or the author giving ... Read More:

Its an interesting book but not the easiest to read because the author is prone to over-elaborate, flowery discriptions and philosophising every few paragraphs. This slows things down and makes it all a bit like wading through treacle. You really want to hear what he's got to say but wish he'd get to the point a bit quicker.
