131.The Diary of a Young Girl: Definitive Edition by: Anne Frank

Books : The Diary of a Young Girl: Definitive Edition
I first read the original translation 20 years ago and was very moved, though reading it now I can see that the language has been tidied up and often sounds far too adult for a teenager.

This 'Definitive Edition' is excellent in some ways because it contains a lot of material which wasn't included before but the new translation reads too much like an American high school student (eg lots of references to 'candy' 'fifth grade' 'report card' 'smart' 'goof'). It gives the impression of a poor, victimised American girl, whereas Anne Frank was European, in fact German (not Dutch!). I believe Anne Frank learnt British English, (her father was a great Dickens fan) so a lot of these terms would be completely alien to her. And historically ... Read More:

Anyone wanting to find a concise overview of World War II that puts every major event into an overall context should look no further. This book is an astonishingly complete account of the hostilities from start to finish. Every significant battle is included together with an incisive summary of why it was important or memorable. The deep knowledge of his subject demonstrated by the author is complemented by a lucid and engaging style. Keegan manages to combine an economy of words with a depth of insight that conveys information without sentimentality or detachment. As a result the facts speak for themselves, often with a devestating effect. Where Keegan provides deeper analysis, his arguements are structured with precision and clarity. You immediately ... 134.Love Letters from a Desert Rat: Alex and Nan's Story by: Liz Macintyre

I loved this book - authentic, with a unique point of view and commentary, the voice of Alex Macintyre with his masterly understatement, gentle but wry sense of humour, determination to prevail but most of all his unswerving love and devotion to the wife of only a few weeks, Nan, the girl he had to leave in January 1941. It is a series of letters to Nan from 1941-45. The brutality of war is left to the reader's imagination, but the effect is all the more powerful for that. Alex reflects in his very personal style about the summer of '41, that things "were at times a wee bit hectic." In his letter of 29 December 1942, as though predicting how his half of this long-distance conversation would be shaped into a wonderful story, Alex talks of "the handing down of my letters". ... If there is one reference book that any serious military historian, battlefield guide or family history researcher with an interest in the battlefields of the Great War should buy, then this is it! I bought my first copy of this excellent volume over ten years ago and it has been a constant "companion" on my battlefield tours and at my side during many hours of research too.

This splendid volume includes over thirty different battlefield tour/routes based on the popular Michelin Maps. Every significant British, American and French battlefield, memorial and war cemetery is covered in detail and the whole volume is packed to the hilt with an amazing amount of photographs (including aerial views) which certainly add a whole new perspective to touring.

I have never written one of these reviews before so bare with me!

I was impressed by this book and its content - not only does it give personal accounts of the girls that were on the farms it povides unknown information ( to me ) about how the Womans Land Army was set up.

The stories that were given protray unfathomable fortitude of such young girls in the face of adversity, adherence to such hardships on minimal rations and general get-up-and-go attitude the girls held right to the very end makes our lives of waiting an extra 5 mins for a bus shameful when they used to have to dodge bombs.

However the friendships that were formed and the love for their work adds an extra glow to this extraordinary story of their calling.

This is one of the most important books of the Twentieth Century. In these times of increased nuclear proliferation, sabre-rattling and political machismo - the human cost of such weapons is often forgotten. Hersey captures the immediate aftermath of the Hiroshima bomb with a detached humanity, showing us what happened without preaching to us. The results are all the more horrifying as we are left to our own inevitable conclusion. This is a book that everybody should read.

This is arguably the best-presented collection of Anglo-Saxon prose and poetry in a single book, expertly and masterfully translated by the author. Includes Beowulf, The Seafarer, The Wanderer, The Battle of Maldon, Bede, Caedmon..with lively commentaries, making Anglo-Saxon culture easily accessible to the reader. This is a cherry-picking of the top items of the literature. For those purists and language-lovers like me, it lacks the side-by-side Anglo-Saxon versions of the texts.
Perhaps there will be another Vol 2 which provides this?
