for a level students studying this period of time this book is a god send! it covers all the major ideas and facts about hitler, chamberlain and the policy of appeasment. this book contains a excellent conclusion on hitler and his policies and neville chamberlains pursuit of appeasement. the section on post-war, revisonist and post-revisionist on appeasment is excellent for students studying appeasement as it fully analyses why people criticised the policy and why the men who purused the policy were seen as the'guilty men'. an excellent, really accessible book for this period of history

This is a book solely for those who have read and watched Band of Brothers, and have been left wanting to know more. Ideally, I would have liked more on Winters during his time in Easy Company, but the parts on his early life and what he did after the war help to give a better picture of the man. Biggest Brother also goes into greater detail on the relationship between Winters and Herbert Sobel, something I felt could have been a book in itself. The best thing I can say about this book, all 281 pages, is that I read it in four days. If you are the sort of person who could not put down Band of Brothers, then you will enjoy this look at the man who lead them.

At the heading to one chapter an anonymous contributor states that a woman on seeing incendiaries falling over London, puts up her umbrella and goes out 'singing in the rain'. As 'singing in the rain' was made in 1952, it quite probably isn't true! I also don't believe the one about the RAF pilot being killed by farm workers who wouldn't accept he was British. he only had to tell them to where to go, so to speak. Perhaps memories are becoming a little fuzzy with time.

There is much to like about David Kennedy's history of the United States during the 1930s and early 1940s. His book is an excellent overview of the political and economic history of the period. His examination of the New Deal is both insightful and judicious, while his description of America in the Second World War is gripping and informative. Throughout the book Kennedy offers a penetrating analysis of events, discerning approaches that reshaped many of the fundamental relations that existed between the American people and their government. Yet in some respects the volume is something of a disappointment.
