Over the years I have read many books centred or reflecting upon holocaust atrocities and I had thought the power to shock would have dimmed. Maus took me by surprise with the depth of sickening revulsion I felt at the horrors which beset Spiegelman's family of Polish Jews. I attribute that to the medium, with the graphic portrayal of events leading to a much quicker and more immediate sense of the unimaginably awful conditions.

As with other such memoirs, there is, however, a strain of hope and plenty triumphs for the embattled human spirits encountered between the pages; and the author's depiction of his own Father (heroic in his resistance to the Nazi onslaught but very difficult to live with in later life) could hardly be ... This is a superb resource for any student studying A-level history and in particular anyone who needs help in a question along the lines of who was the main instigator of the Final Solution. After using thissource to help with my coursework i believe i got an A or B. All quotes were attributed to the author via footnotes. What i liked abpout this book was that there was limited opinionistic interpretation throughout except, of course at the very end when the author makes his own conclusion. What also impressed me was the fact that even though i read the conclusion of Mr Farmer i didnt come to the same one. This shows how unbiased the author writes.
Throughout the book there are numerous sub chapters that focus on a particular group or person ... Read More:

A-Level and AS students may well know this already - but buy, beg or borrow your own copy as soon as you can. Clear, concise narratives and careful explanation of historical opinion make this an essential text for anyone studying Germany and/or Italy in the 20th century. The author has pitched this book at exactly the right level for sixth-formers, although the general reader would enjoy this too. Highly recommended.

This book is about the collapse of the British Empire in South East Asia following the Japanese invasion of 1942. Its stated aim is "to reassemble and reunite the different, often unfamiliar but connected narratives of these epic events and to put the stories of the great men and the great battles of the period into the context of the histories of ordinary Asian men and women."

The authors are two Cambridge academics who, according to the blurb, "are acknowledged as two of the world's leading historians of India and South East Asia". In their preface, the authors inform us that the book "has its origins in a `document-based' special subject" which they taught in Cambridge between 1997 and 2002.

Starting in 1939 with the first leaflet raids over Germany these volumes list the Aircraft and Crews lost in the defence of this Country. It is a sobering thought that 57,000 airman paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
This volume is the roll of honour as as such is a tribute to those whos names it contains. W R Chorley has become the standard reference for all aviation historians as well as genealogists.

These 2 volumes on the hitler youth panzer division, are not for the faint of heart.
The detail and indepth study of the fighting and division composition
is staggering. The narrative focus's on every, single action undertaken by elements of the 12th SS pz. div.
Usually following individual abteilung, the author frequently goes down to platoon and even squad level.
Not only reporting from the German perspective, the allied point of view is studied as well.
Having been a student of the second world war since I was a teenager,
I can state that there aren't many divisional historys that are so
thorough as this study of the 12th SS.
Approach with caution if you are a casual reader! You've been warned.

I have always had an interest in the RAF and most of all it's exploits carried out during WWII. This book gave a gripping accurate account of the Dambuster's raid. I found that John Sweetman gave a very detailed account of events, people and aircraft; from the department in which a person worked, right down to the aircraft numbers. The book provided a rollercoster ride from start to finish. I couldn't help but share in Barnes Wallis' disappoint and frustration when trying to convince others that his plan would work. I found myself drawn into the rush when approval was finally granted and the deadline was drawing near for the bomb to be ready. Even though John Sweetman set out to correct the errors made in previous accounts he took nothing away from the efforts ... Read More:
