This brick of a book is truly excellent. The detail is superb & the writing is of the highest quality. Burleigh offers a fresh perspective on an extremely well documented period of history.
I found this book engrossing & difficult to put down.Charting the rise of Nazism & the decisions & dogma which shaped Nazi policies, this book is surely a must for those with an interest in the subject.
It is obvious why this book has won the plaudits it has. The section on the invasion of Russia is particularly well done, although the whole book is of the highest quality. A work of immense proportions.

In the current financial climate of negative equity and rising prices, we all need to make do and mend. There really is no need to keep buying new stuff when there is a bit of life left in something older and this books will help you.

Featuring reproductions of wartime pamphlets, some of the print quality is not perfect. A little sewing experience would be a good thing, but not vital.

In the war years fabric, ready made clothes were rationed and in short supply, and so was cash! So if you had a good dress but needed a larger one, this book tells you how to insert strips of fabric to bring new life to old garments.

We can buy cheap clothes nowadays but there is great satisfaction in "make do and mend" and reducing ... Read More:

Finally a book that tells the story of the remarkable women nurses in WW2. From the first page the reader is immediately transported to the world that these women were part of. From their nursing training to the weird and wonderful details of their uniform.

If you think you know what nurses such as these did in WW2, then think again. The horrors they endured and the terrible situations they found themselves in will shock the reader and leave you with nothing but admiration for their spirit and bravery.

The book has plenty of quotes and paragraphs from the women themselves, and/or diary entries from that time. A few of the women are featured throughout the book, and the reader will find themselves taken vividly back to that time ... Read More:

Buy this book is all I can say, I have read many books on the holocaust, and life within the concentration camps, and 'Five Chimneys' is one well worth reading......... it will stay with you forever, I also highly recommend 'Is this a man' by Primo Levi. God Bless all the survivors, and all those who died such tragic deaths, under such unbelievable, hellish circumstances. It certainly puts ones life into perspective!

We are very fortunate that this anonymous woman kept a diary of the terrible events that happened to her and many other German women living in berlin at the end of WWII,because otherwise this is a part of history that would forever remain hushed up.
The author writed with total honesty and clarity, without any self pity and even with a touch of black humour. This is a really fascinating diary written using the authors journalistic talent. It's a shame she never received the credit she deserved for this important piece of history within her lifetime.

This book is truly exceptional. An original. Just read it and digest this man's irresitable logic. Goldhagen is a genius. He has married the science of history to those of psychoanalysis and psychiatry.

What is clever about this book is how he makes the reader start thinking about the subject afresh from an analytical view point. Those without some background in psychiatry will have difficulty in accepting Goldhagen's descriptions of the delusions that underlay the actions of Germans and other Jew haters. The very concept of delusion is one that most people are ignorant of or if they are aware of will only ascribe to the obviously mentally ill. Goldhagen's argument is that Germans and others did the things they did willingly because they ... Read More:

I bought the book in one of the small bookshops at Auschwitz I, the main camp. I had just walked through the camp looking at the 2 tons of hair on display and all the other belongings of people that has suffered in the camp. The sight is sickening, but it wasn't the big shock that I had expected. I thought: "Maybe I know too much about the place before coming here".

The horror came with this book. All the personal stories combined with the hard facts of the book makes an interesting and disturbing read.

I have always thought that the people working in the Nazi camps were some kind of monsters or people that have been terrorized physically or mentally to become some kind of inhuman zombies. It turns out that most of them were quite ordinary people. This was the ... Read More:

Most reviewers have understandably, and rightly, focussed on the grand themes and the author's interpretation of events and conflicting political philosophies. I read the book at least in part, however, simply to refresh my knowledge of basic historical facts about the postwar era, and I still hope to use it as reference material to meet that same end. What disappointed me, however, was to discover some very basic errors about rather trivial matters which must call into question the overall standard of research and the veracity of what is presented.

For example, on pages 482/3 we are told that the Eurovision Song Contest was first broadcast in 1970 and, in an uncomfortably lengthy rant about its shortcomings, that it was a 'hopelessly dated format' that would have been 'out of date ... Read More:

I bought this on the strength of other reviews but also had an interest in both the period and unusual Noor story. The main body of text is less than 200 pages, so hardly an indepth analysis of her life. We are treated to a lot of facts, mostly useless, for example house numbers, times meetings took place and dates. Oh, lots of dates, the second world war began in September 1945, wow! Then we are given a throw-away line that France were reluctant participants. Perhaps expanding upon this may have helped us to understand Noor's subsequent decision to leave France. I don't need to know what date war was declared.

We are treated to a few paragraphs of Noor's early life, but only as an excuse for the author's love of name-dropping, which occurs constantly. Perhaps the Noors family met Rasputin ... Read More:

I picked this book up from Amazon for £3.99 and as always I am mindful of the fact that cheap books do not always equate with a quality read. How wrong I was and this book is a little piece of modern history. Hugh Allen (Co-Editor) is one of the few survivors of this interpid band of WW 2 Spitfire pilots belonging to 66 Squadron. The foreword is written by Jimmy Corbin, himself a pilot and chapter contributor.
The re-issued book provides personal histories of the exploits of 10 of these pilots and it was first written in 1942. What makes this book unique is that each of the 10 chapters are written by the pilots themselves soon after the 1940 Battle of Britain, each having their own distinct personalities and writing style. As you progress through the book you begin to see the interdependance ... Read More:
