An interesting scenario, but I got blogged down in the very detailed descriptions of individual units fighting a series of very detailed battles. Not quite what I was expecting or looking for, but the concept has potential.

for a level students studying this period of time this book is a god send! it covers all the major ideas and facts about hitler, chamberlain and the policy of appeasment. this book contains a excellent conclusion on hitler and his policies and neville chamberlains pursuit of appeasement. the section on post-war, revisonist and post-revisionist on appeasment is excellent for students studying appeasement as it fully analyses why people criticised the policy and why the men who purused the policy were seen as the'guilty men'. an excellent, really accessible book for this period of history

A great read that fills in the blanks left by the Band of brothers book and tv series.
Political correctness takes a back seat and Bill and Babe say it as it was.
I felt that more could have been detailed about the different firefights which occured (especially on the Normandy drop.)
Bill touches on this very lightly by saying he was named Wild Bill after killing many Germans on D Day.

However, he doesn't go into any more detail other than admitting that he 'executed' two SS soldiers (on D Day) who had surrendered to him with a bullet to the back of their heads. (He then goes on to say that he has no regrets and feels no pain or sorrow fot killing them. (How many people would admit that in their book ?)

This is an excellent scholarly overview of many aspects of the Nazi dictatorship and deserves to be read widely. With its study of often very complex ideas which require the use of correspondingly complex language, it is not as easily readable as, for example, the author's two-volume biography of Hitler and "The Hitler Myth: Image and Reality in the Third Reich". However, perseverance with this text is very rewarding.

The action starts on the very first page with the sinking of an Atlantic liner and from there we are led, via Casablanca, to the martialling yards of a German controlled railway terminus, para drops, return to UK by MTB, SOE training, para drop back into France the evening before D Day. Hardly a moment's rest!
Well controlled writing then covers the killing of the local Gestapo Colonel to the largest fixed battle ever undertaken by the French Resistance followed by an intensive period of escape and evasion.
Compelling actions and compelling writing from the very first page makes this reviewer wonder if others have openend the book. Or, if so, they have another agenda behind their reviews of what Professor MRD Foot has described as one of the best ... Read More:

I must admit I didn't buy this book from Amazon, in fact I have had it more than 25 years and I still enjoy reading it.

Gripping descriptions of bombing missions are interspersed with other anecdotes, often very funny and irreverant. You get a real feeling of what it was like and how Currie and his crew coped when others didn't.

Highly recommended.

I agree totally with the previous review. The only real fault with this volume are few battlefront opinions of the men that crewed the vehicles. One gem of an opinion that is ventured is that a troop of Shermans should have 3 fireflies to one 75mm sherman. This mirrors the ratio that the Germans had already concluded before the war in their ratio's of MkIII and IV's, ie 3 anti tank afv's for each one that delivers high explosive. A little more technical data would have also been useful. Also too short, otherwise excellent as it is a compelling read.

I bought this book because I wanted to find out more about Mengele's wartime activities and the efforts to locate him after the war. This book succeeds perfectly in the latter but fails in the former. We are given a lightening fast summary of Mengele's wartime activies, with very little examples or witness statements or indeed much in the way of exploration of the man's psyche. Then we have a beautifully researched and well-written account of his every movement postwar. This book feels unbalanced. For this reason alone only 3 stars. Surely developing the character of Mengele the Auschwitz doctor would only have strengthened our interest in the hunt for Mengele the war criminal fugitive?

This is a review of the events of World War II (WWII) and its impact on the stock market worldwide. This work is of great interest since we live in post 9/11 era filled with conflict, threat of another world war and increasing scarcity of resources. The book chronicles the history of death, destruction and the grim realities of WWII in great detail and its impact on stock market in both losing and winning countries. Stock markets were always one step ahead of actual events in estimating, analyzing, and deciphering the economic future through changing stock prices. The author suggests that investor crowd always had a great intuitive wisdom and imagination: Stock markets are like voting machines.

There are some very interesting tales of how stock markets performed ... Read More:

Its an interesting book but not the easiest to read because the author is prone to over-elaborate, flowery discriptions and philosophising every few paragraphs. This slows things down and makes it all a bit like wading through treacle. You really want to hear what he's got to say but wish he'd get to the point a bit quicker.
