This is a great book, and is a great story.
It is strong most of the way through, until he gets a bit too religious and starts preaching his religious philiosphy.
It is extremely clear and easy to read, and the story keeps moving at a swift pace.
Give the intro a miss though, and dive straight into Olaudah's book.

It takes a bit of getting used to reading a book as old as this, you don't realise how much the use of language changes over time. Edmund Blunden was clearly a wonderful writer and experienced the full horrors of WW1. I found the book however ultimately unsatisfying. This is possibly because we live in an age where everything is very explicit whereas Blunden's writings are poetic and subtle. I'll probably read this book again in a few years and reappraise it.

This is a very useful skills book. Through its clear sections it outlines some helpful techniques when researching and writing about history. Unlike the Jeremy Black, Donald M. Macraild Studying History book it does not go so much into the historical tradition which, in my opinion, makes for a much easier read.

This book was bought for my 13 year old daughter for use with her history in year 9. I found the book to be excellent in its content. It is worded at the right level for anyone interested in history and not just for those in year 9. The information is not overpowering and the activities are used effectively. The books use questions as headings in some chapters and this enables the pupil to ask and answer questions with their own thoughts and opinions. This is highly recommended for anyone doing history whether at GCSE or A-level as the information is relevant to both courses.

The series was brilliant, and I really looked forward to reading the book - and, for once, I was not disappointed!

Ms. Cadbury should feel proud about her achievement. The book is very well written, and the information conveyed in such a relatively short space (only about 50 pages for each 'wonder') is rich, detailed and extremely interesting - and should prove interesting for everyone! She draws together tales from the labourers, from the supervisors, from the finaciers, and from the relatives of those involved with the, often, super-human projects to produce a truly fascinating book.

I don't normally go for historical books, but this is probably one of the best exeptions to that rule. All I can say is, "thank you mum for ... Read More:

This audio CD book, alongside with other Naxos educational CDs for children, is absolutely fantastic. It contains loads of information, so adults interest is guaranteed as well as children's fascination. It's a must for curious little minds. Presented in an easy listening format, it educates and enterntains at the same time. Boring car journeys became a highly enjoyable and educational experiences in our family since Naxos CDs were purchased. Being non-fiction, they can be listened to over and over again, offering a chance for the child to remember and/or understand more details each time.

I thought this book would be an interesting history, but it turned into a real page turner, even though I knew the ending. The best book I have read on the Tudors, bringing the complex political issues into an easily understandably context with dumbing down the history. If you want an exciting overview of this period read it and enjoy.

I am an avid history reader, but before I read this book I knew only a rough outline of Indian history - perhaps even that's an exageration! So for me much of this was new and exciting. As usual, Wood's enthusiasm and writing skills make his work a pleasure to read, and also gives a real sense of the place and people.

I particularly enjoyed the first chapter looking at the earliest prehistoric times, especially the section on the fire cults and mantra based rituals that could go back almost as long as mankind has walked the earth. Mind boggling.

India is such a rich, interesting and diverse country that it is far beyond the scope of a single volume to cover everything important in sufficient detail, but as a sweeping overview ... Read More:

I have read, recently, both this book (twice) and Sandy Woodward's book (100 days...). The different characters of the authors and the stresses and strains of their respective positions in the war, come through very clearly in both books. If you want to understand what it really FEELS like to Command a warship at war, and to lose that ship, then read this intensely personal account from David Hart-Dyke.
