This is an excellent biography of John Hunter, one of the most famous surgeons to ever have lived. The author is an expert writer and whilst it can be a cliché to speak of history reading like fiction that certainly is the case in this book. We map the progress of his life and the discoveries he makes within the field of medicine and science. Most of the science is wonderfully explained so that even most lay reader will be able to appreciate the discoveries. The sinister side is not left out either, whilst Hunter may have been a medical genius it is certain that he engaged in less praiseworthy activities such as robbing bodies from graves. Hunter's personal details are given here also, we see his upbringing, his marriage and his feuds with ... Read More:

I am interested by this book, because it has had its impact on the way history is taught. But now - sixteen years after it was first published - it is a pinnacle of everything wrong about historical theory in the modern world. There as some things which are just plain patronising about it, like the idea that historical literature is different from the past: 'This might strike you as odd for you may have missed this distinction before..' on page 6 (Oh really? Like I hadn't noticed the difference between a book about the blitz and having bombs dropped on me.) But the important issue is the post-modernist bias of text-obsession. It criticises history on the grounds that to 'do' history you must read texts, which are just discourses. This is fundamentally ... Read More:

This is one of those history books that is more a challenge to accepted opinion than a set of radical ideas in itself. The author writes on a range of military matters, mostly centred around how we should be looking to shake off our Western centric view of military history, in that the rise of the West in history was largely due to technical and professional prowess.

The author of course, provides plenty of reasons as to why this is completely wrong, many of which most readers will probably be aware of. The examples cited are ones I have certainly come across before, but taking all those examples together in one book really does present an interesting viewpoint. He indicates at length that our view of military history is largely borne from historical ... Read More:

139.The Making of the Atomic Bomb by: Richard Rhodes
May 05, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Making of the Atomic Bomb
This is book is sincerley the most engaging and well-written non-fiction title I have ever read. Exceptionally well-researched, this book takes you from the beginnings of atomic theory right through every important discovery, culminating in the development of thermonuclear weapons. The book goes into much detail, but I never found it too 'heavy' at any time. Simply a marvel of literature, Richard Rhodes has really done well here.
This book IS suitable for readers who are not experts in physics, it breaks things down to make them suitably digestable.

This is an excellent scholarly overview of many aspects of the Nazi dictatorship and deserves to be read widely. With its study of often very complex ideas which require the use of correspondingly complex language, it is not as easily readable as, for example, the author's two-volume biography of Hitler and "The Hitler Myth: Image and Reality in the Third Reich". However, perseverance with this text is very rewarding.
