I was majorly dissapointed when I finished reading this book earlier on this afternoon. The story has the promise of being extremely exciting and the ending highly anticipated. When you come towards the end of the book you realise that a lot of loose ends will not be concluded despite the 600+ pages and the story doesn't seem to be coming towards a climax with 10 pages to go. This book had the makings of a book I wouldn't put down but sadly I wish I hadn't picked it up.

Blood and Guts is a pithy and readable history of surgery that does not hold back on the successes and the botches.

One of the most amusing anecdotes became known as the "night of the pigs" and takes place in the National Heart Hospital in London in 1969.

Surgeon Donald Longmore waits for a delivery of pigs. He plans to graft a pig's heart and lungs into a patient to keep him alive. One pig has other ideas and makes its escape onto Wimpole Street, pursued by gowned, capped, masked and booted theatre staff.

The pig, now secured by the expert team, is taken to the mortuary to be put to sleep, but the anaesthetist assigned to the task is Jewish. Another anaesthetist is found, but there is another problem: the ... Read More:

I used the book in Egypt and found it an invaluable guide for any first-time traveller who is booked on a Nile Cruise. I found the information accurate and up-to-date and it saved me a lot of hassle. The author explains things in an easy to understand way and offers many helpful tips, especially with regarding to dealing with the more persistent Egyptians that work the tourist areas. And believe me I encountered more than my fair share of them! However as this is a specialised book, dealing specifically with a Nile Cruise I would suggest you use it in conjunction with one of the more general Egyptian travel guides such as Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. Overall I found it an excellent book that was easily carried around in my bag and definitely ... Read More:

Being an engineering student, the closest brush I had with the formal study of philosophy was a few university courses, which I barely passed. Therefore, I decided to buy Bertrand Russell's classic work in order to refresh my knowledge. I wish I had done it earlier.

Bertrand Russell, one of the greatest minds of the 20th century, enlivens philosophy-from ancient Greece to today. His account is lengthy, as any account of such a subject should, but well worth it. How else does one condense 3000 years of Western intellectual history in one volume?

I liked the pace of the book. He begins with a definition of philosophy and its roots in the Ancient world. It is not so much a list of facts as it is a discussion of the ideas of the ... Read More:

`The Reign of Henry VIII: Personalities and Politics' is a short examination into the various influential persons and factions that shaped the politics of Henry VIII's reign.

The book at first appears rather short, being only 145 pages long. Yet Starkey is able to chart the rise and decline of various notable figures in Henry's reign and of the groups that tried to exert their ideas upon the king and in official policy.

Starkey first examines the situation early on in Henry's reign, where he presents a young king who is more engrossed in image and in pastimes rather than absorbed in the meticulous running of the state. A comparison is created between Henry and his father Henry VII, who unlike his son, was concerned in curbing the ... Read More:

This book is a must have for any serious martial artist. Bushido is unfortunately a term which is widely used but in the main part, very poorly understood. Even the modern understanding of Bushido is somewhat lacking, leading people to believe that the samurai were so honourable that they could do no wrong. This simply isn't the case. The samurai were human beings like everyone else and the passages in this book show this nicely. There are many lessons to be learned and applied to everyday life in the Hagakure and any person wanting to follow the way of the samurai should definitely read this book.
On a different note, this is something that REALLY irritates me so I must point it out: hiri kiri is a bastardisation originating from America. The proper ... Read More:

39.Stalingrad by: Antony Beevor

The Battle of Stalingrad was, without doubt, one of the most gruesome episodes of WWII. Beevor manages to write not just a well-researched history of the battle, he also manages to draw the reader into its horrors with his marvellous prose and eye-witness accounts. This is a history that comes alive from the pages to leave an indelible sense of anger, horror and, to some extent, shame in the reader's mind - are we really capable of acts such as this? Could we have survived?

Even someone for whom WWII is a remote historical curiosity would be hard-pressed to deny this account's power and immediacy. The book reads like a novel but, unlike a novel, what we're reading is true; it happened; this is what mankind is capable of. Too many books are regarded ... Read More:
