Alison Weir's very readable account of the origin and the first phase of the Wars of the Roses focuses, on her own admission, on the personalities and the characters of the two sides to the conflict. In doing so, she creates an interesting story, with a quite detailed historical narrative. Although some have criticised her strong bias towards the House of York, this never overwhelms the narrative, and it is surely quite permissible for an author to have a bias in a popular work of this kind.

She gives only occasional brief asides that reflect on the social, economic and political issues as stake, as well as the military innovations and tactics. As an introduction to the Wars of the Roses, this is probably a good enough place to ... Read More:

You would not want to be known as a member of a club in the sixteenth century; clubs then were seen as violent and conspiratorial gangs of men. By the eighteenth century, that had changed, and men could gather in clubs with a feeling of doing something constructive and high-minded. One of the main reasons for the change in meaning was the Kit-Cat Club, a massing of writers, musicians, artists, politicians, and titled gentlemen who met in London and flourished around 1690 to 1710. The influence of these men in politics, in art, and in forming the British character was vast. The influence of the club is detailed in _The Kit-Cat Club: Friends Who Imagined a Nation_ (Harper Press) by historian Ophelia Field. A big book, rich in detail pulled from diaries, ... Read More:

Some of the most fascinating characters in history hail from the murkier depths of times lacking much documentary sources. Perhaps their interest comes from this patchwork of conflicting sources, or perhaps the temporal distance lends enchantment. It also presents a problem for the biographer, in that the lack of sources makes it difficult to write authoritatively on the subject. If the subject is a mystery then the book can't be much more than conjectures joined up with speculation.

Eleanor of Aquitaine occupies an odd place in such a time. As a ruler and heiress in her own right, and as queen of France and later England, her life is much more richly documented than most of her contemporaries. Her movements, lodgings, nutrition and clothing can ... Read More:

Painful and devastating, yet utterly compelling. Painstakingly and thoroughly referenced, he documents not only the utter depravity of but also the appalling scale and ruthless persistence of the systematic murder of European Jewry.
This book is a sharp scalpel to views of innate human goodness, to the contemporary degrading of the horror of 'genocide' and the final nemesis of the fraud of holocaust denial - every civilized person should have read it.

Books : An Introduction to Genetic Analysis
I am a student from another major (environmental engineering), so I had no any knowledge in genetics previously. After reading 4 chapters and finishing related exercise, I find I gradually gain a sense of genetics. This book is very comprehensive and focusing on main themes at the same time. For important topics, the authors will mention them again and again. I can say, if you read carefully, you can not miss them. At last, I would say the problems at the end of each chapter are really good, which is very helpful for grasping related knowledge.
I would recommend this perfect canon to beginners like me.

Amongst historians this book has quickly reached the status of a classic. But it deserves to have a much broader readership as the subject it tackles - that of how 'ordinary men' can end up doing morally repugnant deeds - has implications that go far beyond its historical context. There is a human tendency to categorise and blame groups of people because it is easier than facing the possibility that anyone is capable of horror. An example would be the claim that 'religion causes wars' - it places the burden on an external agency, on the 'other' rather than the fact that anyone can commit an atrocity.

This is what Browning's book illustrates beautifully; the gradual steps these ordinary men take on the path to atrocity. Browning refers to a number of psychological ... Read More:

This book is really well written, entertaining and extremely thought provoking. It provides a whistlestop tour through the classical world in terms of how we study it, not the classical world itself. If you want lists and dates and what is taught at school as 'history', this is not the book for you.

The premise of the OUP Very Short Introduction To books is to take an expert who has something really interesting to say on a particular subject, whether it be bananas or the classical world and then get them to talk about their interest in the subject in an easy to digest 150 short pages. This is not clearly explained, and these books are often picked up by total novices expecting something like 'a dummies guide to'. Well, there are already 'dummies guides to' which ... Read More:

This History of Britain vol. 1 is by no means exhaustive but that's not what it intends nor claims to be. Instead, you get an engaging page-turner, as addictive as the best detective or adventure novel, told by an expert in the matter and a consummate story-teller to boot. I bought this after having seen the BBC series but, trust you me, the book is even better!
