Dawkins writes that "the argument of this book is that we, and all other animals, are machines created by our genes" (p.xxi) and that "We are survival machines - robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes" (p.xxi). Yet, according to him, this book "is not science fiction; it is science" (p.xxi)!

Dawkins contrives to overlook the twin discoveries that:
1. the observable traits of organisms are mostly conditioned by the interactions of many genes;
2. most genes have multiple effects on many of these traits.

Dawkins transfers characteristics with which he is familiar from human behaviour on the macro-level to the inanimate components, "genes", of which we are physically ... Read More:

Worth reading cover to cover, this book is written in a lively style and has DK's usual high quality photos on every page. I bought a second copy as a gift for a friend. I wish I'd read this when I was at school - I'd have wanted to become an architect.

This is written with both humour and intelligence and is a startling re-examination of what you thought you knew about WW2. Davies's first point that every country involved has created it's own very national interpretation of what happened you immediately realise must be true and therefore your own understanding must therefore be flawed. This intellectual conundrum keeps you reading through an excellent book that is full of surprises and fascinating facts.

My grumbles are threefold. While this book discusses how you should see this war as a whole and therefore start discussing the importance of Polish resistance or the fact that Belorussia suffered worse than any other country in the war, it does ignore the other bit of the war...the Pacific. True ... Read More:

You are a prisoner in a concentration camp. A dying Nazi soldier asks for your forgiveness. What would you do?
Simon Wiesenthal poses this question in this book and 53 distinguished men and women give their response as to what they would have done in this situation. The answers I found particularly intriguing were those given by Harry James Cargas and Eugene J. Fischer. I also liked the response given by Harry Wu because it struck me as very down-to-earth. Apart from that I would agree with his belief that it is inconceivable for something like this to happen in China.
All told, I found this book most intriguing and while I was reading it I wondered how I would respond to this request. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if you will wonder, too.

This is a great book that everyone should read, Bill Bryon has written this brilliantly with some amusing sections. It really shows the reader why science is so interesting and how various people (with intriguing characters) in history have worked towards some great discoveries including some of those who missed out on grabbing the credit for it.

I really enjoyed reading this.. if only science was taught like this when I was at school!

The zionists have been using dubious claims about the events of World War 2 to justify their own holocaust against the unfortunate Palestinians. These disgusting people have to be removed from the middle east and speaking out in word, action and deed is the way we are going to achieve this.

Books : Studying History 2nd ed (Macmillan How to Study)
I had the pleasure of being taught by Don MacRaild at university, and this book is as vibrant, relevant and accessible as his lectures. Highly recommended for students, especially the sections on essay writing. Also offers a clear and concise overview of the discipline of History. A must!

I think this book was quite interesting and made me feel very sad at the end. It is good but it also is not very engaging and it was rather boring in parts. I bought it after studying it for A level English and even though i thought it was ok, it is not one of the best books that i have read.
