Having only read Birdsong by Faulks previously and not having enjoyed it much I was reluctant to try this until a friend positively forced it on me. It is very, very different in style and content from Birdsong. It is dark, lucid and modern in tone unlike the Proustian romance of Birdsong. Having read this book I should say from the outset that this method did not work for me, however, I have lent the book to over 5 friends of mine (Sorry!) and all have managed to as soon as finishing the book!! I can honestly say that this is a very honest and well thought out method for quitting and am very happy I read it, because, ever since finishing it, whilst I haven't managed to break the habit... I have hated every cigarette since!!! Well Done!! If your a smoker... Please try this!!!

I have been very keen to teach my son the letters of the alphabet but wanted to do it the right way. Having visited his school he will be attending next year, they do follow the Jolly phonics scheme and therefore these books have been great along with the work books. It's given me the confidence to teach and he has enjoyed the colourful pictures and tracing with his finger the letters. We are now moving on to book three after he has managed to read and write the letters in books one and two. Being a working parent and mum to a one year old aswell we are only able to do learning for an hour on a friday so these short to the point books are great. My husband also helps by going over a book for 5 mins at bedtime before reading a short story. It certainly ... Read More:

Lola is very excited because Marv is bringing his little brother Morten round to play, and Lola has lots of plans for Morten, all of which Morten, who seems to be chronically shy, doesn't seem to have a lot of say in. It ends well, as usual, but with that nicely ambiguous mix of morality and what children are actually like and what children actually do, which makes these books so appealing. This has the usual top class illustrations. I love Child's style, the cut and paste, scrapbook mixed with line drawing and other media. It's fascinating to see what materials she has mixed up to create such child friendly illustrations. This is a fine, basic recipe book, but not particularly inspirational or exciting. The recipes I have tried have worked out well, though!

A Thousand Splendid Suns left me emotionally drained - but in a good way! I had tears rolling down my cheeks for the last couple of chapters. Although I had a couple of very minor gripes (for instance, I don't think it was fully explored why Mariam felt so hostile to Lalia at first given what a tyrant she was married to) this book certainly affected me on a very deep level. There were certain descriptions that have stuck in my mind as being so simple but so powerful. Hosseini is a great story teller and a master of words, that's for sure. A novel like this reminds you of why nothing beats a great book - rarely can a film affect you in this way or play on your mind for days.

Having just renewed my interest in slow cookers I bought this book based on amazon reviews. Some of the receipes are interesting but you will spend time having to research what some of the ingredients are. This is fine but I thought the whole point of owning a slow cooker was to save time! This book was written for the amercian market and probably makes a lot more sense there.
