The strength of the book is the detailed description of the development of a cathedral and its impact on the prosperity of a town through a page-turning narrative and fictional characters. It is a fairly easy read on a difficult subject. It covers the civil war during the 12th century (Stephen and Maud) The downside is it is not a very memorable read. When my book club recommended it, I did not even remember I had aready done so! I certainly would not say don't read it - especially if you are doing GCSE architecture or medieval history. It does bring the period to life more than a textbook would and that can spur you on to learn more. However, it is not a great piece of historical fiction.

This is not a bad book, it is very comprehensive and well written, so it is fun to read and contains useful information. It seems intended to be read through more than as a reference book.
However, in my opinion it is a bit too much. The information overloads the reader and then it is difficcult to remember the key things a new mom has to have in mind.It would suit you if you have a control freak side and want to know absolutelly everything about -1 yr old babies. It won't suit you if you are an aprehensive person.

I love this book. If you only ever buy one "parenting" book, make it this one! It is written with warmth and humour and the author's obvious love and respect for children shines through.
He is not concerned with "managing the child's behaviour" but rather with developing the psychological skills she needs to successfully manage her own life......and to this end, provides us with the ways in which we can assist in this process.
He is also not concerned with "guilt tripping" parents for any shortcomings in their parenting skills....what a relief!
This is a very clear and easy to read book and if it were compulsory reading for all parents, would be parents and teachers, our future generation would be in very safe hands! I highly recommend ... Read More:

The Smartest Giant in Town
My 3 year old son loves this story, he will request it again and again and it always holds his attention and he will listen intently. I have noticed he will attempt to read the story to himself assisted by the colourful images.
For those who liked the Gruffalo this is another fantastic childrens story by Julia Donaldson and is well worth having in your child's collection; From an adult prespective its also enjoyable to read.

An unlikely superhero, admittedly, but Matthew Shardlake is a brilliant construction, and this book is not to be missed. Neither is the second. In fact I can't bring myself to read the (probably) final one, because I'm saving it for a week when I can concentrate solely on it! Yes, it's a bit predictable, and the sidekick can be a tad irritating, but it's just a story...not an historical treatise. Enjoy it, that's all. Please let someone make the movie...it'll be a brave man who takes the lead role, but a sure-fire Oscar!

I recently bought this for my daughter after spotting it in Marks and Spencers. I earned a few strange looks with my mini squeal of delight, but nevermind! I had completely forgotton about this book until seeing it again, and the memories flooded back as I read the story to my daugher. The simple story will delight any child, but for me, the drawings made the book. A must!!

My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".

In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense.

All-in-all, a disappointing follow-up to the excellent original.

Let me just say one thing; I am an avid reader. I love books. Whenever I begin reading, I cannot stop halfway through, even if it is an absolutely awful book. However, this book went beyond awful. It was so far past awful it made me want to throw up (and I wish I were exaggerating). Not just because the book is basically a doctoral thesis on human psychology wrapped in a plot stolen from 'The Coral Island', but mainly because it makes no sense.

Let's start at the beginning: The arrival. The pilot manages to safely land the plane on the one island in the middle of nowhere, while the cockpit is on fire. Having done this, the several tonne plane then washes out to sea, after all the boys have left, without a scratch on them. Not even a bruise, after an emergency ... Read More:

Having read and loved Garth Nix's OLD KINGDOM books (SABRIEL, LIRAEL, and ABHORSEN) as well as his SEVENTH TOWER series, I had pretty high expectations when I started in on SUPERIOR SATURDAY. I wasn't
disappointed. The action moves along quickly, with new and original presentations of magic at every turn, and major and minor characters worth cheering for (or, in the case of the antagonists, against).

The sixth book in Nix's KEYS TO THE KINGDOM series picks up right where the fifth book left off, making it a little confusing to understand at first, especially if you're a newcomer to the series, like I was when reading this. The book is certainly good enough to merit your going to the library and checking out all of the previous ones in order to get up to ... Read More:
