Its a reliable indication a cookbooks value and usefulness if its encrusted with splashes and looks as if it has been marinated in soy sauce. My copy of China Modern is rapidly approaching health hazard status. Its up there with my (rather older) Ken Hom's Chinese Cookery and that's praise indeed. If you only bought one chinese cookery book this would be a good one to pick. Indeed the kung pao chicken recipe alone more than repays the cost. My partner now claims this as his signature dish and is only too happy to rush to the kitchen to prepare it. Ching-he's food stands out because it tends to be punchier and more flavoursome than many a standard chinese recipe. Her recipes are accessible and designed to fit in with a modern busy lifestyle ... Bill Bryson is more or less superman in today's literary world. He transcends subjects in a single bound and the globe in another. He's a talented critic, writer and humourist. It's a good job, to use modern vernacular, that he's the daddy because, with this one, he's taken on the mother of all literary subjects.

He's done so wisely. He's not attempted to become an original researcher and posit new theories about the man's identity or his plays and other works. He has essentially evaluated and sumamrised the existing state of Shakepearian debate and study, providing his own critique of what is compelling and credible. Thankfully, Bryson was born without a 'boredom gene' and the book reaches any audience, reading so easily. The man does ... Read More:

The title says it all, this book is GREAT. Whether you are a first time mum wanting a bible or are looking for the ideal present for a mother to be, this has got to be it. I have not yet found another book that is so thorough, reassuring, practical, unbiased or (believe it or not) entertaining as this one. It will save you trips to the pediatrician, reassure and help you with practical problems, give guidance on baby's development, in short, there is not an area or issue, however obscure, that hasn't been covered.

If there is any criticism at all, as mentioned by a previous review, is the way the book is organised into months, although it is hard to see with the volume of information it contains how it would best be done. I would agree with previous ... Read More:

44.Katherine Swynford: The Story of John of Gaunt and His Scandalous Duchess by: Alison Weir

I was disappointed. Katherine Swynford is barely a ghost in this book. On the other hand we learn an enormous amount about the cast of hundreds who knew or were related or even contemporary with her. The book jumps around a great deal as well, filling in history about people I had no interest in and drifting away from what was supposed to be the main theme. That was confusing. As there were no facts to hang Katherine's character or life experience on, this was a dry and very lifeless read. It did follow John of Gaunt's life closely although he never came to real life between the pages either, which would be my most serious criticism. There's also a lot about Geoffrey Chaucer but I didn't buy the book to find out about him!

I'm no expert on cbt or any type of psychology and I'm always slightly wary. CBT, however, was recommended to me by a psychologist to assist me to help my client group - troubled young people. I love the 'for Dummies' series as they are really easy to read but provide you with quite a broad knowledge for a layman. There is a wealth of sound practical advice in this book for everybody and I can't believe how much I'm learning about myself and my incorrect thinking and its effects. This book requires a lot of concentration (although the style of writing is easy) and effort to think the material through and also to complete the exercises but it really is life-changing. I don't know if it works really well for serious mental health problems but it is certainly working for ... Read More:

Overall I enjoyed reading this book, an easy read, nicely written. However some parts was over detailed, slow and predictable.

I gave this comic two stars because even if it's nothing special it's a light hearted read. The problem I had was that there just seemed to be to many characters squeezed in and not enough story. One of my favourite batman comics is Knightfall which is filled with characters but pulls it off well. Anyway I guess you have to make your own mind up but don't expect anything amazing unless you prefer characters over story.

This was such a pleasure to read. I always appreciate novels whose authors work hard on evoking a particular setting, and Sansom does this both in terms of the location and the period. It's great to see Shardlake on his home turf, and the pacing of the plot is just superb. An almost perfect piece of storytelling.

I am immensely puzzled by McCarthy's fame. I keep thinking I should love his books, but I just don't. People I admire and whose opinions I trust urge his books on me and I conclude that these people must be nuts. I managed to read All the Pretty Horses. Goodness, what a waste of time. I read about ten pages of No COuntry for Old Men, hoping desperately that it would grip me. No luck.

So, when I read the first few pages of The Road and instantly felt the kind of exhilaration I wanted to get from his other books, I bought it. Should have saved some cash and visited the local library. Once you get the gist of the narrative framework (post-apocalyptic, father and son trying to reach safety, bad guys everywhere), that's it. It is left to Mr. McCarthy to fill in the graphic ... Read More:

I have never picked up a professional camera before, so books with aperture and white balance etc went straight over my head.

This book is great for someone new to digital photography who just wants to go out and take pictures that look great.

The book features allot of the basic equipment you will need to get started and a few prices to give a feel for things. It's nice to finally have a few comparisons of what to expect to pay depending on the quality of equipment. The book gives you the information on how to take different pictures and what to look for if your interested in the theory behind the different camera settings and how the equipment works.

The only thing not good about this book is the typically poor American humour used throughout, but it's not ... Read More:
