I have not read any other works by the author so for me this is the first time I've met the character. The cover caught my attention, and as I enjoy detective novels and historical fiction, this looked the book for me. The basic storyline is that our central character, a lawyer, is ordered to assist with some legal proceedings which take place during Henry VIII's progress to the north or more particularly York. The place in time is just after the great Northern Rebellion and during his marriage to the young and flakey Katherine Howard. I love JH's style of writing and I certainly wasn't disappointed here! She manages to hold the threads of the story together well, though I'm not convinced that the ending worked so well. Not sure how else she could have ended it though! Highly recommended.

I have just finished this book and, after Dissolution, I am well and truly addicted to this series. I really like the lead character of Matthew Shardlake and the other characters in this and the previous book. Will be starting on Sovereign asap and can't wait to read Revelation from what I've read on Amazon about that story. There seems to be a plethora of murder-thriller type books set in the 15th-16th century around at the moment but this is without doubt the best of them all.

I read this because it appeared on the BBC 100 Best Reads list and had some good reviews. I was rather disappointed to say the least. The writing style is simple and lacking in depth, although it may just not translate well. The story is a parable with a message about 'following one's dream'. Although this message is repeated frequently the story line is a bit forced and ends as something of a shaggy dog story. It's a bit like a cross between an Aesop's fable and a self-help book, with a bit of half-baked philosophy in the mix. I think it would appeal to older children and those who like something cheerful and unchallenging.

I won't give a synopsis since this has already been done ably by other reviewers. Why this autobiography 'worked' for me is that Mr Ballard has reflected his past experiences to his present situation so movingly, and with characteristic modesty. As a young man he considered his unusual childhood to be of little interest to anyone; only late on in his life has it provided him with explicit material for fiction - and now, with this account - for fact - only latterly has he recognised that he had unconsciously used his childhood experiences as literary motifs. In this brilliant novel we get to see three women, one evil and guilt stricken the other shy and gullible, and the third women young beautiful and vain. After reading the other Boleyn girl thirst, I was able to understood the true cruelty of Jane Boleyn (lady rochford) in this book once again she only thinks of herself , she befriends both of henrys new queens with only her interest in mind. She is most obsessed with Anne Boleyn and her brother George Boleyn. She feels the guilt as it was her who help put both brother and sister to death. She is a jealous vile women who gets her just deserts as someone uses her to his own advantage, giving her hopes and dreams and then easily taking it away from her. Anne of Cleves is very shy and ... This book was recommened to me by friends, and I am so glad that I took their advice and read this. It is one of my favourite books of all time. I just loved it so much, I found it really interesting to see the story unfold from the perspective from Annes sister, and experience the life of the court through her eyes. Luckily I read this book before I saw the movie otherwise I never would have bothered with it. The history might not be 100% accurate but its so well written and enjoyable that I didn't care and just enjoyed the novel at face value. Highly recommended!!

The author's ideas startec out well in the first couple of books, but there are just so many inconsistencies and so little science in these books that they lose any credibility and become fantasy rather than science fiction. Dwarves, elves and orcs in space you might say. Just hwo fast is this stardtrive? The main players travel vast distances in such a short space of time, how do trees get into space, and what drives them? Is earth populated by dimwits with no investigative journalism? The chairman (of earth - what a daft concept) is a Stalin type figure who seems to have no opposition at all, the Klikiss insect has fabulous technology, but you never hear of or get to meet an intelligent one, and worst of all, if such a being as a faero existed (that lived in the heart of a sun), ...
