has a lot of work for groups or writing, so no good for self-study. SO many mistakes its unbelieveable (e.g. missing CD tracks, missing answers, extra answers to questions which dont exist, spelling errors just to name a few).

This pack comes with CD, course book and answer key with tapescript. you have to buy the Activity book with all the grammar work seperately. This activity book, saves my rating from being a 1 star. it is a good book with lots of practice. the course book is rubbish. even the feel is out of date. it says it is the 2nd edition published in 2006, but the photos look like they come from the 80's and the layout is not very pretty. certainly not wotrth the money, but good luck if you can find another intermediate ... I bought the CD as part of the Contatti Italian to teach a class. I speak Italian fluently, and even then found the layout confusing. The CD is not divided into the various sub-sections so one cannot FF or RW except between chapters and one therefore wastes much time waiting for the right sub-section to be played. I would therefore NOT recommend it to anyone unless the CD is remastered to allow stop/start in between each sub-section.

This is truly the best grammar book I have found for Italian, truly a great piece of work by the author. It explains everything that "a Reference Grammar of Modern Italian" does, only in a way that everyone can understand, and without all the extensive technical information. Italian examples are in green writing so that you can easily distinguish different parts of explanations. On my first read I have already absorbed more that I did with "a Reference Grammar of Modern Italian". This is not say "a Reference Grammar of Modern Italian" is rubbish, it is not, it is a really in depth study of Italian grammar, but I personally prefer a book that I can understand, and I honestly believe that everyone can understand the content from the barrons book.

15.Teach Yourself Italian Conversation (Teach Yourself Conversations) by: Maria Guarnieri

Books : Teach Yourself Italian Conversation (Teach Yourself Conversations)
"Italian Conversation" includes 3 CDs and a 48 page booklet. The course is designed to epand your vocabularly and increase your confidence in speaking Italian.
All the converstions are written out in the booklet and are recorded on 2 CDs. The third CD is unique - it has more conversations recorded on it (that aren't in the booklet) and it teaches listening and understanding skills.
Though it could be used on its own, I find the pack particularly useful combined with "Teach Yourself Italian". It is ideal for beginers or those who can allready speak some Italian. I am teaching myself Italian for GCSE and find the course easy to use and enjoyable.

I teach French (Improvers) and Italian (beginners) to people of my own age in the University of the Third Age. The modern idea that grammar can be learned entirely in context, and wholly without structure has been taken too far in popular language books and audio-visual aids produced for people learning at home and in weekly further education classes. In Italiano is the only course which I have so far encountered which achieves a happy balance between those awful Latin primers inflicted on an older generation of schoolchildren, and, for example, BBC courses which get students no further than asking the way, the time, or where the nearest bank is. Another reviewer has described it as a "bible" for learners of Italian. I completely agree.

This is an excellent little book, as long as you use the CD with it. I didn't give it five stars because I feel that in some areas the authors were trying to get too much grammar in than can be absorbed all at once , and I think a few solid written texts ( short adapted and graded extracts from newspapers or letter, articles etc) would've helped rather than just short dialogues. Nevertheless, I've learnt quite a bit and think that by the time I visit Italy I'll be able to get by without getting lost or arrested!

I purchased this after going through Michel Thomas's CD's and found that it really seemed to jump a lot and so I left it. I initially put it down to the fact that it was just my slow learning. However I then moved on to the BBC's Italianissimo series and then a wider range of textbooks, while using Pimsleur Italian series (very expensive).

It is through this experience I think I can say that this book was very weak in allowing the brain to absorb the language as the reader progresses. I never felt that it inspired me to progress or gave me the feeling I was learning something the way other books have.

Although there is worse out there I would not recommend this book!

OK so I'm guilty of not reading all the information carefully, but I ordered this course on the basis of the reviews so I was a little disappointed when the course arrived minus the cd/cassette element which the reviewers had found so helpful. Usually, Amazon makes it clear if the reviews refer to a different edition but on this occasion there was no warning.
