I was looking for a revision book for GCSE that accompanied the play 'MACBETH', I of course found hundreds! I decided to refer back to a previous purchase I made when I was looking for a revision book for the play 'Death of a Salesman'. I then searched for a book on 'Macbeth' by the same company/author and came across 2, this GCSE version and the advanced a-level version. I purchased both and I have never regretted it, I would highly recommend both for different reasons. The GCSE book provides you with everything you need for a basic understanding and the majority of the demands GCSE has. The a-level book provides you with that little extra which if used appropriately will push that little bit more to get a top grade. Between both books almost ... Read More:

I studied this for my A-levels, which either increases my enjoyment of a book due to greater understanding, or removes some of the magic. For me The Tempest was difficult to quantify, was it merely an allegory for Shakespeare's life, a masterpiece; Shakespeare's only truly original work, or just bland. There are some interesting pieces, mostly the relations between characters, Caliban and Prospero for example. The themes which are raised are the most successful part of the play, particularly the nature/nurture debate, and the question of to what degree human behaviour is governed by habitat. However the plot is thin. Some people arrive on an island, two fall in love and they all get off it again. I found it hard to care what happeened ... Read More:

This play is great. Not at all overrated. Beautiful, passionate, affecting, etc.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is one of the most important and popular novels in literary history. One hundred and fifty years on it remains as controversial as it was at the time of its publication and has spawned the term Uncle Tom to describe black people who are excessively meek and submissive in the face of racial abuse and prejudice. The debate today though is not about the morality of slavery, which is universally reviled, but instead focuses on whether or not the author inadvertently demeans and degrades the very people for whom she sought both dignity and liberation.
The novel begins in relatively liberal Kentucky in the home of a `liberal' slave owner and his wife who are reluctantly forced to sell two of their slaves to an unscrupulous dealer ... Read More:

So, like most people, i used CGP notes while doing my GCSE's and found them mostly good (especially on the poem anthologies) - the humour though, while sometimes fun on many occasions got in the way of serious learning and the notes were brief when dealing with full length plays and novels.

Step in York Notes. For my A Level English i got one of these books for each of my set texts and they were massively helpful in prompting class discussions, writing essays and revising for the exams. They offer detailed chapter summaries and analyse them in an extremely informative way.

There's quotes too, maybe a little too few, but the ones they pick out are good and then at the end of the book you get a wealth ... Read More:

I decided to read "Othello" after enjoying "Hamlet",another one of Shakespeare's celebrated tragedies. I must admit that I did not enjoy "Othello" quite as much however. It's plot is quite complicated; labyrinthine at times, and much of it's language is obscure and hard to follow . The play concerns itself with the endeavours of the thoroughly malevolent and evil Iago to destroy the Moorish Venetian general Othello, his boss. He does so by poisoning Othello against his innocent wife Desdemona. He convinces him that his wife is having an affair with Othello's deputy (and Iago's rival) Cassio. Othello takes the bait and duly obliges Iago by becoming filled up with hatred of his wife which eventually leads to a tragic ending and a series of untimely deaths . The play ... Read More:

Vergil's epic used to be read as the traditional moral propaganda that justified the Roman empire and Augustus' rule, but it's a far more complex and problematic poem than that. Yes, as a previous reviewer, has stated, he takes Homer as his starting point, but Vergil's intention is not to 'top' Homer but to question and reflect on Rome's self-identity and the values that Roman culture has been built upon.

It is possible to read this is a simple, rousing epic of war and the heroic ethos, but the other 'voices' question the very values that the poem purports to support. Ultimately this is a poem of profound grief and loss and mourning for the past and for the price that has been paid in order to move forward into the future, and in this sense, it is a comment ... This book is about a lion named Leo who didn't fit in with his pride, because he just wanted to look for love and make friends with other animals in the jungle. After he was forced to leave the pride of lions, Leo did his best to help every kind of animal in the jungle, but never asked for a thing. Eventually, he became the king of animals in a different way.
The lovely colorful cover of this book will catch your eye in the bookshop. The illustrations are animated and charming as if you were in tropical Africa. From the illustrations page by page, Leo's enthusiasm and kindness are obviously an important part of the whole story. And the most brilliant drawing is the one in which Leo's friends arrive at the bank and link themselves up tail to paw to rescue him. How smart ... Read More:

In 'Twentieth Century Actor Training' Alison Hodge manages to draw together the different methods of fourteen of this century's greatest theatre practitioners, from Stanislavski to Wlodzimierz Staniewski. This book is a must for all students of theatre studies or any other performance related studies. The book comprises of fourteen chapters, all by different authors. Each chapter is broken down into three basic sections, a potted history of the life of each practitioner, a breakdown of the key elements that they used in actor training, including many examples, and finally a history of how these principles were used in performance. The text is divided into manageable sections with several photographs of historical productions some helping to explain and demonstrate the method in ... Read More:
