I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick and easy read, admittedly, but it does not bill itself as a Shakepeare textbook or biography and would be a different animal if it was. If you take it at face value, it's a fun read, helped along by Bryson's amusing style.

Where here the blunt Aussie frankness that Germaine Greer has celebrated and been respected for all of her life?
When writing history, it is sometimes almost acceptable to now and then fill in gaps by positing things to make sense of an action, but this disingenuous offering is the worst `history' book I have ever read in that it is 99% conjecture - positing - and 1% truism.
After 400 pages we know exactly nothing more about Shakespeare or his wife, than we did - than anybody did - before. Using highly irritating devices like: `if... we might suppose... it is not inconceivable... I would argue...' etc. ad nauseam, Greer attempts to create a woman whom she can find sympathy with, for no other reason than to defend her against the criticisms ... Read More:

We got the board book version of this book out of the library for our nearly two year old, and she loves it! The illustrations are fun and colourful, and the story is simple with easy rhymes and repetition. A perfect book to read aloud at the end of the day.

Wordsworth and Coleridge's 'Lyrical Ballads' was revolutionary at the time of publication, and remains one of the most important volumes in the history of English Literature. The volume contains Coleridge's famous 'Ancient Mariner', as well as popular Wordsworth pieces such as 'Tintern Abbey' and 'We are Seven'.

A first time reader may not quite understand what all the fuss us about, as some of the pieces (particularly Wordsworth's) can seem facile and at times banal, something contemporary critics savaged him for. To truly grasp the spirit of the volume the reader must take time to absorb Wordsworth's 'Advertisment' in which he outlines the 'experimental' nature of the volume, as a reaction against the the artificiality and 'innane phraseology' of ... A year or so ago, my friend introduced me to Vampire Knight, and I used to read it online, but, when I found out it was out in book form, I bought 2 volumes of it. And of course, I still enjoyed every moment of it.

The basic setting is a boarding school (Cross Academy) attended by both humans and vampires (who, by the way, are not the undead, just a seperate species from us - also, their existence is a secret in this universe, like it is in most vampire novels). Vampires attend the Night Class, and humans attend the Day Class.

The Chairman of the academy, Kaien Cross, adopted a young girl called Yuuki 10 years ago, when she was left out in the freezing snow, and attacked by a crazed vampire - however, she was saved in the nick of time by another ... Read More:

This is NOTHING like Milne.

Yes, it is funny, if you like puerile, smutty and sometimes weak jokes.
It has far more in common with Ogden Nash than Milne, but Christopher Matthew lacks Nash's talent.
Eccles' illustrations are excellent, and do remind one of Shephard's.

I am not yet sixty, but getting there fast, and am old enough to remember
the early editions of Pooh and company fondly.
The inside dust jacket review of my copy of 'Sixty' calls this an "affectionate tribute to Milne". In my opinion Matthew has deliberately mis-packaged his work to make money off Milne's place in our hearts.

Both our 3 year old and 5 year old love this book. It is taken out everyday without fail - even when there's no time for a story, we are asked for "just a quick one" from it. 'When Daddy fell into the pond' is probably the absolute favourite, but the choice is wide and varied. The biggest problem is the fight over which poem to read next.

'Journey's End' opens in the bleak environment of the Western Front as a new arrival James Raleigh comes to join a group of soldiers in the trench system. The 'journey' on which the soldiers embark upon is contains two human attributes, the first being emotional attachment, the second being the power of perceiverance.

Sherriff does not need to go into the graphic details of what happens when the men 'go over the top', however he builds up a number of passionate friendships that both move and endear the reader. The first of these relationships is between Commander Stanhope and Officer Osborne who is 'the only man who could understand me' as described by the company commander at the moment of Osborne's demise. Their relationship is one of two brothers as they look after each other ... Read More:

'Wide Sargasso Sea' is basically a prequel to Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' which tells the madwoman in the attic's story. It goes back to the childhood of Bertha (here called Antoinette - the name Bertha is given to her patronisingly and domineeringly by Rochester). We see how she grew up as a Creole in the West Indies, her family's evolving situation and her eventual marriage to Rochester.
At this point in the story we switch for the most part to Rochester's point of view and for lovers of his character in 'Jane Eyre' this may be time to look away...or open up to this rather negative interpretation, at least. It's an interesting portrayal and even though you can't totally sympahtise with his behaviour in 'Wide Sargasso Sea', I think Rhys does a good job of making him a 100% human character. ...
