Charles Nicholl's books about Marlowe and da Vinci have previously graced my reading list: the first is a meticulous reconstruction of Marlowe's final meal in an attempt to explain the playwright's death, which is sometimes a little repetitive; the second a more conventional biography of the renaissance polymath. The Lodger is closer to the first, in being a depiction of how Shakespeare possibly lived whilst in London, centring on a single event, the signing of a legal deposition by the playwright which concerned his landlord, but fortunately without the repetitiousness. This is the book for you if you have an interest in Drama but would like to exoand your understanding of some of the issues involved in the writing and presentation of dramatic concepts. A useful opening chapter covers the basics and then lets you delve around to deepen your understanding in whatever area you wish. You can read it chronologically or dip into particular styles or periods. The approach is simple and avoids being unnecessarily highbrow. If you are a general reader, someone who is developing an interest in drama, a student or an avid devotee then there is something here for you, I would think. I certainly picked up an enormous amount in a short time and will be returning to it in the future for more information.

A year or so ago, my friend introduced me to Vampire Knight, and I used to read it online, but, when I found out it was out in book form, I bought 2 volumes of it. And of course, I still enjoyed every moment of it. The basic setting is a boarding school (Cross Academy) attended by both humans and vampires (who, by the way, are not the undead, just a seperate species from us - also, their existence is a secret in this universe, like it is in most vampire novels). Vampires attend the Night Class, and humans attend the Day Class. The Chairman of the academy, Kaien Cross, adopted a young girl called Yuuki 10 years ago, when she was left out in the freezing snow, and attacked by a crazed vampire - however, she was saved in the nick of ... This book is extremly useful for any school student studying 'the crucible' as it helps you to get to grips with the plot, the characters and the action. It helped me tremendously.

I don't want to rain on the parade, but, while this is a truly great book because of its content, the production of the book is flawed enough to be problematic. The paper is much too thin, making it hard, at times, to read the text. This is especially difficult for the introductory essays, which run across the entire page width. (The text of the plays themselves is in single columns, not double, as often in complete Shakespeare editions.) So if you buy this sight unseen, as I did, be aware that your reading experience may not be optimal.

I brought this book to help me on my AS King Lear coursework. It was such a help! It had all the major themes and ideas as well as language and act-by-act notes. It has some complex ideas but easy to work through. The feature I like the most is that in the margins of the books it has further reading or websites to go to for more information on the topic you're looking at. This study guide is a must!
