George Orwell never found writing that easy but he cared a great deal about the English language and by a huge amount of hard work developed a brilliant and lucid style.

I read Animal Farm and 1984 many years ago and I have since read most of his other works too. Although I disagee with many of Orwell's political and religious views, I have always enjoyed reading his work.

These essays cover many subjects such as English society, the use of language in political debate, the Second World War, Charles Dickens, H G Wells and many other topics.

Excellent and recommened reading.

If you want an edition that doesn't contain more than forty poems from Larkin's maturity, then this is the one for you. If, however, you would like to be able to read what Blake Morrison called 'Larkin's last great poem' ('Love Again') or other examples that stand comparison with his best work, like 'Marriages', 'Letter to a Friend about Girls', 'Strangers', 'Autumn', 'Maturity', 'The Dance', 'Negative Indicative' etc etc, then avoid this edition at all costs. Try and get the original Collected Poems second hand, which has them all in. Otherwise you risk being socially embarrassed when someone starts talking to you about 'Gathering Wood' and you swear blind Larkin never wrote such a poem. Think of it!

P.S. It has been pointed out that ... Read More:

It's been a while since I've read any of Marian Keyes' books and I don't know why. Her books have an instant feel-good factor, and as the title suggests, makes you want to snuggle up under the duvet with a big bar of chocolate. I thoroughly enjoyed the journalistic articles in the book but I didn't really take to a couple of the short stories or the Mammy Walsh problem pages. I just lost interest, maybe because I was really longing for more of the true-life stuff. I haven't read the first book "Under the Duvet" and I will definitely be rushing out to buy a copy. Marian Keyes is a great writer and long may she keep writing!

Although Light is close to creating his perfect world, he has started to encounter some unexpected problems. Near and Mello, the two genius youngsters who have taken over from L, are competing with each other to try to solve the case first, Near working with the FBI and Mello with the Mafia. Having kidnapped Light's sister Sayu, Mello appears to have the upper hand as he blackmails the NPA for the Death Note but Light is soon making plans to retake the initiative.

Death Note continues to be nothing less than involving in this eighth volume of this fascinating manga and the plot seems to be getting thicker and more convoluted as time goes on. If there is a downside of the story so far it is that the two replacements for L, Near and Mello, ... Read More:

Books : The Night Before Christmas
I bought this for my Daughter (who is 18 months) as I wanted to introduce her to Father Christmas.

It is a time-honoured classic and the illustrations are really beautiful - I think I appreciate them much more than she does at the moment!

A really lovely book to buy and keep for now and the future.

I got this book by complete chance. A friend of mine wanted to buy me a book for christmas and i was drawn to this selection of plays. I am an avid theatre goer and reader but had never heard of Sarah Kane so it was a bit of a chance buy. What a book. I could not put it down from start to finish. I stayed up all night reading it as it was absolutely gripping. It is supremely dark but written with intelligence and thought. It is an abstract representation on her own view of life and i believe that it is truly brilliant work. What a shame that the world has lost a writer such as Sarah Kane.
