Look back in Anger is not only a classic of the British theatre, it also had reverbatory effects around the world upon its release in the 1950s. The play features some of the most vivious confrontations and acidic language I have ever read, and is ideal material for male and female monologues. Jimmy, the protagonist, has perplexed audiences and directors alike - how can any woman stand to live with him, let alone be drawn back to him after seemingly 'escaping'? But that is the lure of Jimmy's character - his sheer charisma. He is a James Dean for the English middle-classes, without the stunning looks, but with more reasons to rebel. The imagery of the play is at once subtle and exciting: Osborne is a master at creating visual and audio contradictions. ... Read More:

This book is an interesting collaboration of philosophical ideas and graphic design.
It offers a condensed retelling of McLuhan's basic theories. I would recommend this book as it is easily accessable and readable as much for the use of imagery as for the use of words. If you want a series and indepth look at McLuhans work then 'the mechanical bride' or 'understanding media' would be far more suitable as they contain far more information. But i still highly regard this book as almost a conceptual piece.
A classic and highly memorable work as well as a fun and insightful read, highly recommended.

I bought Alan Bennett's books on tape for my mother. She used to listen to them in bed at night, lying in the dark as Bennett's gentle, querulous voice described the minutiae of his family life in all its banal detail, illuminated by his wonderful observation and humour. Any one of his sentences will raise a smile. A whole book's-worth leaves you glowing with a feeling that all of our lives are equally full of this richness. How could they not be, when Bennett has found so much in what appears to be such a constrained and circumscribed world? He is indeed a national institution and we are fortunate that his voice on tape is perfectly equal to the poignancy and intimacy of his writing.

Dante's Inferno tells of a fantastic journey into the inner circles of Hell and was written in the early 14th century. Dante uses himself as the main character and his lierary hero, Virgil, as his guide given to him by his lost love Beatrice. What follows is a moving tale which details Dantes travels through the different realms where sinners live out their horrific punishments. He meets well known people (such as Homer, Ovid and Judas Iscariot), but also talks to a lot of his political rivals that he met during his time in Florence (before his eventual exile).

There isn't much in the way of a storyline, but what there is is a frightening depictiction of this terrible plane of existance, and at times it feels as if he himself struggles to write. ... Read More:

This is a short book at about 130 pages (although with a 45 pages of appendices including texts of speeches) but it provides an excellent introduction to Barack Obama and the place that his Christian faith holds in his life. It briefly describes his upbringing by an atheist mother and Muslim father, his conversion to Christianity and his relationship with his mentor, Jeremiah Wright. The book doesn't delve deeply into Obama's political history but discusses a few of his political views and how they fit with his faith. There is a particularly helpful chapter which looks at Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain and George W Bush and the way in which the faith of each of them works out in their lives.

The book was an easy read with some interesting anecdotes ... Read More:

Absolutely brilliant - insane, funny, ridiculous and thrilling. The writer and artist play with conventions brilliantly: steam-punk gets a 1950s-meets-Futurama feeling, stereotypes are unveiled and then immediately twisted and the central characters are complex and engaging. The story-line is rock-solid too. Highly recommended.

Blake was a visionary and a genius, a man who truly saw angels walking among men, and a man in whose powerful imagination London became Jerusalem. Blake was one of the most interesting characters of the 18th and 19th centuries, and lived in some of the most tumultuous times of the last thousand years. To truly appreciate Blake, you need to be able to see his illustrations along with his poetry, for Blake was not only a poet, he was also an artist. As I am studying Blake in my English class I can tell you that this is an incredibly worthwhile edition. The reproductions are fantastic; and include some rare plates in their full coloured glory. The volume tells you which edition of the plates are being reproduced (for Blake hand-made and hand-coloured each one individually ... Read More:

This book really helps you to understand the text in greater depth. I would recommend it for anyone doing Frankenstein coursework at GCSE level, as it builds your confidence before you begin writing your essay.
