I brought this book to help me on my AS King Lear coursework. It was such a help! It had all the major themes and ideas as well as language and act-by-act notes. It has some complex ideas but easy to work through. The feature I like the most is that in the margins of the books it has further reading or websites to go to for more information on the topic you're looking at. This study guide is a must!

I first had to study Yeats for a school project and, quite simply, fell in love. (Well done to the male reviewer who discovered this powerful weapon of a poem.) The most beautiful poetry written and ranging from the romantic to the heart-breaking. Buy this book and you too will swoon.

the Jackson Knight translation previously available in Penguin Classics is vastly superior...and should be sought out in 2nd hand shops...Quite why penguin thought it a good idea to change a classic version of a classic is beyond me; that said at least it isn't as bad as the awful Seamus Heaney version.

The Last Cigarette is the third volume of playwright Simon Gray's diaries which he began with The Smoking Diaries.back in 2004. Its not easy to categorise these books - I've chosen "diaries", for most of the time they record daily events over the course of a year or so, but also slip back to descriptions of events in the past. The free-form, conversational style gives the reader the impression that he's almost feel that you're listening to Simon Gray while chatting in a bar - which is not surprising because apparently he writes his diaries on an A4 pad, whenever he finds himself alone in a café, bar or hotel room.

The diaries contain a wide range of topics - descriptions of holidays in Greece and Barbados, the period when his play ... Read More:

A superb collection of essays on some of the most interesting figures of the twentieth century. Many of them are obscure and I found the book useful for expanding my reading in new and unexpected directions. Since buying Cultural Amnesia I have often found myself looking up further books by the people mentioned.

This is a great book to have lying around for when you have ten minutes to spare and want something quick but mind expanding to read.

like in life, good but flawed.
As a collection it is exceptional, with such a variety of some poets better work, however, the cumbersome ham-handed indexing at the begining leaves something to be desired. it is indexed in the order of poets date of birth, of course suggesting anyone who reads or has to study the books contence know the date of every single poets birth. leading of course to many fun hours of frustration trying to find a single poem by a poet in the very centre of the book.
the up side is in the back the poets are listed in rank of surname first, and as well as some basics on the poets lives there is a page reference telling you where the poets are in the book.

I am a fan of talking books, and I would describe many of the ones that I have heard as good, entertaining, thought provoking even. But this collection of stories stands so far above everything else that I have listened to that I can't see them ever being eclipsed. They are that very rare thing in literature - something that is brilliant, complex, moving - but absolutely not worthy, or 'difficult'. How many of us have struggled through a Booker prize winner because we 'ought to', when really it was too much like hard work? These stories are just so entertaining. You very quickly forget that they are monologues because the scenes and other characters are so real that you can see and hear them as if you were watching a full-cast production. You will be able to come ... Read More:

a Pam Ayres book, but never got off my backside to get one, then this wagged its 'come hither' finger at me in Asda last Saturday. Always enjoyed her work, she's not on TV enough, but is 'On Tour' right now, I found, if you check her website
This book is a cracker and will have you chuckling along all the way through, because Pam always writes about events we can relate to, which is her great strength.
Get a copy, then, like I'm planning to do, get some of her other books from Amazon; my idleness has now been cured, as laughter, is indeed, a wonderful thing. She dishes up exceptionally good British humour in a world where American humour seems to be trying to take over, and OK, maybe I'm one-in-a-million, but The Simpson's and all the other codswallop from the ...
