I bought this to pass a transatlantic flight, and it did, wonderfully. Not many philosophy books will achieve that. So it's funny, entertaining, and OK, everyone will know some of the jokes, but few will have read them like THIS before. I have always felt kind of ignorant about this discipline (while also thinking "life is too short for this abstract wiffling", if I'm honest), especially in comparison with my OH who went to the philosophy lectures at uni for FUN while doing a science degree. This book doesn't bring me anything like up to his level, of course, but at least I do know what he's talking about now (he enjoyed it too) and might read more widely. I'd say this is a great book for bright young teens upwards: those who read it before ... Read More:

Great read, go on treat yourself.

Containing some of the best Emerson essays (Self-Reliance, History, Nature, Divinity School Address, Experience) this attractive little book from Dover is apparently subsidised by people who believe you should have Emerson practically for free. How right they are. In fact Emerson should be on the National Health Service. Easier to read than almost any other great thinker ancient or modern, Emerson is a magnificent prose stylist and, as the epigraphs show, not a bad poet. An absolute joy: if you've ever wondered why Columbus bothered, Emerson alone would be enough to justify America. If you haven't read Emerson before...Go on, treat yourself.

The unusual form of the book, each chapter relating to an element of the periodic table (not every element is included), to tell the tale of a chemist's life is highly effective. The content reinforces the form and the form the content to give a really high quality novel.

This was our group's favorite book by a modest lead over Lolita and The Master and Margarita. It is beautiful and moving and much more enjoyable than his good but harrowing Auschwitz tales.

Please do not be put off by the slow start - Argon is a very thin, rare gas and this chapter is one of the least engaging perhaps for that reason. Iron was most people's favorite element.

The Last Cigarette is the third volume of playwright Simon Gray's diaries which he began with The Smoking Diaries.back in 2004. Its not easy to categorise these books - I've chosen "diaries", for most of the time they record daily events over the course of a year or so, but also slip back to descriptions of events in the past. The free-form, conversational style gives the reader the impression that he's almost feel that you're listening to Simon Gray while chatting in a bar - which is not surprising because apparently he writes his diaries on an A4 pad, whenever he finds himself alone in a café, bar or hotel room.

The diaries contain a wide range of topics - descriptions of holidays in Greece and Barbados, the period when his play Butley was ... Read More:

This book is produced by Pierre Gagnaire who has held the title of the 3rd best restaurant in the world for the past few years (El Buli and the Fat Duck being 1st and 2nd respectively.

It is a good quality book with about 50 michelin 3 star recipes. As usual with these books some recipes are very do able by the skilled home chef and others really need a brigade of chefs. That does not bother me as with all these books you are pushing the envolope as to what is possible at home which I like.

Although the recipes are on a par with the French Laundry (Thomas Keller 4th best restaurant)and Recipes of a 3 star chef (Gordon Ramsey) the book is not as sumptuous as these works in terms of layout and photos. Both of these books particularly ... Read More:

Edna Longley's new edition of Edward Thomas's poetry is a joy - generous in every way, in size, elegant Paul Nash cover(they were wartime friends) and above all is the full and convincing commentary on poems, especially those which show Thomas's dialectical working-out of dilemmas and decisions. Her exploration of the background to the poems in prose writing, letters and notebooks creates an intriguing picture of this complex, gifted writer whose life was so sadly cut short just two years after he began writing poetry.

I too had to read it more than once...

What's the point of the author indulging in a 'Chautauqua' on 'Romantic' & 'Classic' 'Values', with the resultant (extravagant) soliloquy on the 'Value' of 'Quality', when the author can't even work out how to relate to his own child (who having spent the majority of his formative years in apparent mental turmoil - brought on by the behaviour of the author, as described in this book - was murdered in San Francisco 2 weeks before his 23rd birthday)?

This book is just another example of self-indulgence sold off as enlightenment...

What's the point? There is NO point.
