If you are an A level English Literature student i urge you to not buy this book- I was thoroughly disappointed with it and indeed tried to sell it off before I bought the much better source of "Out in the Dark". The poems are random, with a worryingly minimal supply of female poets. There's not even any dates on the poems so you cannot analyse the poets thoughts or purposes. If you just want a little collection to read this would be perfectly adaquet, but from an educational point of view do not touch it!

As a child who was brought up on nursery rhymes from this book I believe it is a must have, including all your favourite rhymes as well some you may not have heard. It is a significant achievement that this book is still for sale having been published in 1969 and it is a testiment to its learning and entertainment value. I will ,however, admit to being biased as my Grandmother wrote/compiled it....

I was looking for a revision book for GCSE that accompanied the play 'MACBETH', I of course found hundreds! I decided to refer back to a previous purchase I made when I was looking for a revision book for the play 'Death of a Salesman'. I then searched for a book on 'Macbeth' by the same company/author and came across 2, this GCSE version and the advanced a-level version. I purchased both and I have never regretted it, I would highly recommend both for different reasons. The GCSE book provides you with everything you need for a basic understanding and the majority of the demands GCSE has. The a-level book provides you with that little extra which if used appropriately will push that little bit more to get a top grade. Between both books almost ... Read More:

I first had to study Yeats for a school project and, quite simply, fell in love. (Well done to the male reviewer who discovered this powerful weapon of a poem.) The most beautiful poetry written and ranging from the romantic to the heart-breaking. Buy this book and you too will swoon.

This offering from feminist playwright Caryl Churchill is an uncompromising critique of the capitalist mode of feminism as advocated by the model of the eighties power women, most obviously personified by Margaret Thatcher.

'Top Girls' deploys an interesting technique whereby characters narratives overlap leading to complicated scenarios wherein meaning is lost in the melee of competing voices. It certainly makes for difficult listening or reading but acts uniquely as a physical representation of the interupted and disjointed histories of the women whose situation it aims to ameliorate.

The play is split into three main sections. The first act witnesses the meeting of various fictional and non-fictional characters from ... Read More:

This is a well written book which I read for the story. This is simply because the 'erotic' parts are rather bizarre and unappealing. I also found the 'love interest' Illya rather repellent if not downright obnoxious. How any woman could put up with such a man is to me a mystery I did not solve despite having read the entire book. And since I do not want to be bogged down in any feminist swamp of liberation/humiliation paradoxes I'll just say its not my cup of tea.
Nonetheless this is an excellent novel, funny witty and well plotted, the main character Beth makes an engaging narrator who keeps the reader reading.

P.S. Has anyone picked up on the 'literary' touches (such as the curtains)?

I did not care for the items we had to read at school that is until I came across Siegfried Sassoon. He explains clearly with passion and experance what WAR truely is. In an age of mass media and what appears to be new wars every other day, he so the true cost of war not in pound or dollors.
To read his work even one at two of his poems will show you the horrors of war better than any Hollywood movie.
Reading his work is like talking to the man, and he has given you excess to every private though in him . He is a true great.

Books : Siddhartha
This allegorical tale of a Brahmin's son who gives up everything in the search for his self is, in my opinion, one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. The story is short and clear, with one foot in Buddhism and another in Modernism. The first time I read this book (during one sitting in a Toronto cafe), I fell in love with it. Now, after reading it for the second time, I feel as if it will be the book I keep by my side, through out my life, for whenever I need to be comforted.

If you feel lost, depressed, unhappy or unsure about life in general, this book is worth a thousand self-help tomes injected into your blood.
