Although Light is close to creating his perfect world, he has started to encounter some unexpected problems. Near and Mello, the two genius youngsters who have taken over from L, are competing with each other to try to solve the case first, Near working with the FBI and Mello with the Mafia. Having kidnapped Light's sister Sayu, Mello appears to have the upper hand as he blackmails the NPA for the Death Note but Light is soon making plans to retake the initiative.

Death Note continues to be nothing less than involving in this eighth volume of this fascinating manga and the plot seems to be getting thicker and more convoluted as time goes on. If there is a downside of the story so far it is that the two replacements for L, Near ... Read More:

This critical study of The Great Gatsby not only gives an excellent feel of the time the novel itself was written (see the chapters on The Jazz Age, and The Post-War Voice), but explores in depth themes and issues emerging from the text. Imagery such as death and ghosts, the colours gold and white, and the sea, are all discussed, as is the relationship between the four main scenes where the action takes place. As you would expect, the main characters themselves, and what they represent, are looked at in detail, and Gatsby himself is given a thorough analysis, with dedicated sections on, for example, his mysterious past and the destructive nature of his dream and his aspirations. In addition, this study also offers separate sections on the women ... Read More:

I may be biased but ... double column, tiny print, no notes, very thin introductions, textual editing a hundred years out of date ... the RSC edition paperback is only twice the price but surely offers ten times more: includes 350 pages of introductory material, fullest notes of any one volume edition, great pics (this has none), up to date scholarship and above all a single column readable size typeface. For an investment to last a lifetime you won't regret paying the difference - how much extra is it? about the price of a decent bottle of wine.

Imagine me - there I was, for decades of my life, thinking I knew how to read a book. I'd advanced through elementary school and prep, into college and finally to graduate school when I discovered, to my horror, that I in fact did not know how to read! Perhaps that helps to explain my affinity to literacy programmes, with whom I will begin working again come this Wednesday.

But no, perhaps I overstate the situation. What I actually mean to say is that it was not until my graduate school days that I happened across the most excellent work How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading, by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren. This staple had somehow eluded me; familiar as I was with both Adler and Van Doren, I had never encountered ... Read More:

The unusual form of the book, each chapter relating to an element of the periodic table (not every element is included), to tell the tale of a chemist's life is highly effective. The content reinforces the form and the form the content to give a really high quality novel.

This was our group's favorite book by a modest lead over Lolita and The Master and Margarita. It is beautiful and moving and much more enjoyable than his good but harrowing Auschwitz tales.

Please do not be put off by the slow start - Argon is a very thin, rare gas and this chapter is one of the least engaging perhaps for that reason. Iron was most people's favorite element.

This is one of those books that manages to crystallize half-thought-out ideas and insights that you have but never really manage to develop. And once you get your head around the central ideas you can see how applicable these are in many different bits of the world. Obviously, it all about metaphors, and the early chapters of the book look at the types of metaphors we use and how prevalent they are. This stuff alone is really worth a read just to make yourself aware of just how often we use metaphors, but also how we use many different expressions of the same underlying metaphor. Take the following example from the book:

"Theories (and arguments) are buildings:

"Is that the foundation for your theory? The theory needs more support. We need some ... Read More:

A very useful story and full of insights. Graves is very matter of fact about the most horrific aspects of the war - summary executions, soldiers wanting to kill their officers, officers who shot one of their own soldiers to persuade the others to leave the trench and attack, alcoholic officers who sent hundreds to their deaths, accidental deaths and deaths from our own sides guns. In a very detached style, we see all the horror involved.

He explains the strict hierarchy of society and of the army at the time. Yet, although he is obviously disillusioned with the war, he speaks as an old soldier, who believes in discipline, who cannot help but feeling that Britain is justified. Si whil he explains that those sections of the army who were undisciplined and 'slack' ... Read More:

William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is arguably the most famous play ever written in the English language; it presents the world with questions and characters that have been the subject of thespian and scholarly debate ever since the Prince of Denmark's first appearance on the stage of London's Globe Theatre. Probably written and first performed in 1601 (estimates vary between 1600 and 1602), the play draws on Saxo Grammaticus's late 12th/early 13th century chronicle "Gesta Danorum," which includes a popular legend with a similar plot centering around a prince named Amleth; as well as several more contemporaneous sources, primarily Francois de Belleforest's "Histoires Tragiques, Extraicts des Oeuvres Italiennes de Bandel" (1559-1580), which expands on the story told in the "Gesta Danorum," ...
