I was asked by a friend abroad to find some English poems suitable for children in the 8-12 age group. He was recalling the stuff in our old primary school readers,e.g. Tennyson, Scott, Rosetti, etc.
In this unassuming volume I think I have found many poems suitable for that age group. But yet so much more for those of us who are older.
This volume selects around 360 poems from over 100 poets who wrote in English. The poems are grouped to match the different phases (and related concerns) of life from birth to death.
There are poems in this from many well-known poets through the ages from Chaucer to Plath. There are also several less-well known poets included.

Clearly, this type of anthology was well thought out ... Read More:

3 of Alan Bennett`s short plays including 2 of his favourite leading ladies , Dame Thora and Patricia Routledge. I had read the first two before , the third , a dialogue between himself and Dame Judi Dench was a stranger to me . This collection is classic Bennett at it`s very best -- a joy to listen to . Hopefully more of his early works will find their way onto disc soon.

This book does exactly what it says, providing all the poetry you will need for literacy and more. I use it for most of my poetry ideas as it lists all the genres and provides good variety.
Only bought this a few weeks ago but already well loved and written on to remind me which poems to use for certain word and sentence level work as well as particular genres. I will be buying the other books in this series as i am keen to find out what else there is to offer in this poetry collection that is so well tuned to the needs of teaching.

This is the most enjoyable Betjeman book I've ever read - a book that's so good, it ought to be part of the English Literature curriculum. More than that: it ought to be read by everyone applying for British citizenship! In the course of 360 pages, Betjeman plunges you into what he regarded as the major issues of English identity - issues of aesthetics, civic duty, relations with authority, and individuality.

I suppose that all these ideas are contained in Betjeman's poetry, but there one tends to get distracted into noticing rhythm and metre and scansion. And Betjeman's poetic ideas are smaller. Here, although the writing is often lyrical, he addresses topics in a much more direct way. He cares that unvalued townscapes are being ... Read More:

Born and bred in Wigan.I had read 1984 and Animal Farm but had put off reading TRTWP until I was 50.
Orwell writes of the hopelessness of the masses and concludes that they accept their lot because of the "palliatives" of modern technology i.e.cheap clothing (dream of being Greta Garbo or Clark Gable) , alcohol, the movies, radio, the football pools etc.
The government massage and manipulate statistics to show unemployment levels and poverty to be a fraction as bad as they really are.
The middle-class believed that the poor should be instructed to spend their means tested allowance wisely eating tasteless but healthy food, wholemeal bread, oranges, raw carrots etc and to shun alcohol and tobacco etc.
Tell me as anything really changed ... Read More:

Dr. Seuss, the famous author of `The Cat in the Hat' and `how the Grinch stole Christmas', has written this masterpiece (which is tricky to say)!
Fox in Socks is a brilliant board for books and it is a book of crazy tongue twisters. It is a simple, sturdy book for babies of all ages (as it says on the back). Dr. Seuss is great if you want a laugh or you need some cheering up (although hit might frustrate you at times)!
In this book, there is a fox, Knox, chicks, Sue and Slow Joe Crow. In addition, an unnamed chicken chews the blue gooey goo. I think this book is lovely but the events are very, very, very random. I would rate this book 7/ 10 and I would recommend it to all children and fun-loving adults.

Books : Homage to Catalonia (Penguin Modern Classics)
Note how the great Orwell never says anything positive about those doing the bulk of the fighting against Franco - in fact, note how he barely mentions Franco and fascism at all! In the course of the events he descibes in this book, he spends most of his time doing nothing, like the rest of his Trotskyist and anarchist friends. Meanwhile, the Republicans, whom he slanders from afar, were fighting and dying in the front line against the Nazi and Italian forces who enabled Franco's victory. Note also how he never says a positive word about the Soviet Union, which was the only country to help the Republic, while the British and French governments helped Hitler and Mussolini to intervene.

I don't want to rain on the parade, but, while this is a truly great book because of its content, the production of the book is flawed enough to be problematic. The paper is much too thin, making it hard, at times, to read the text. This is especially difficult for the introductory essays, which run across the entire page width. (The text of the plays themselves is in single columns, not double, as often in complete Shakespeare editions.) So if you buy this sight unseen, as I did, be aware that your reading experience may not be optimal.
