It's a fantastic edition and lots of space to take notes. If you simply want to read the play, then try another edition, as it can be a little annoying only reading the right hand side, whereas the rest is full with notes.

This is the translation of the Odyssey that Naxos used on their abridged audio CD recording read by Anton Lesser. The reading really sparkled as I imagine it would have done when recited by Homer to an audience. This translation is brimming with atmosphere, colour and feeling. It is a real pleasure to read, much more so than some of the more recent, dryer mid 20th century translations. The second hand book was in excellent condition.

Pick any of his books, or plays, or the spoken word, or any of his monologues. Each one an absolute jewel. Mr Bennett, probably more than any other 20th Century writer truly encapsulates the human condition in all it's colours. From the antique dealer to the pedophile, from society's square pegs to the perfectly round ones, from the rich to the down and out. He paints them all in perfect colours. Regard his work as a peephole (one is almost tempted to say a voyeur) unto late 20th Century Britain with all it's vagaries and in all it's aspects and you're just about there. Give it a couple of hundred years and he'll be considered as one of the great writers of the English language. A 20th century Shakespeare.

There are very few good recordings on this CD. Apparently no attempt has been made to clean up the recordings, so most have a terrible hiss and the speech is barely recognisable. Some good recordings (but not Shakespeare) - including a funny speech from The Importance of Being Earnest. Basically avoid it.
