Thy merit hath my duty strongly knit,
To thee I send this written embassage,
To witness duty, not to show my wit.

(Sonnet 26.)

How to do justice to the legacy of literary history's greatest mind - moreover in such a limited review? Forget Goethe's "universal genius" and his rebel contemporary Schiller; forget the 19th century masters; forget contemporary literature: with the possible (!) exception of three Greek gentlemen named Aischylos, Sophocles and Euripides, a certain Frenchman called Poquelin (a/k/a Moliere), and that infamous Irishman Oscar Wilde, there's more wit in a single line of Shakespeare's than in an entire page of most other, even great, authors' works. And I'm not ... Read More:

So many people do not know that this is where the hit musical came from.

Although this book is hard to obtain you must get it if you like cats. It was read to me when I was a child and I have since read it to many children in my care.

I have done volunteer work with rescued cats and to tame feral cats I read them the poems. It works! TS Eliot had great understanding of the character of a cat and I know he would have loved the idea that cats themselves enjoyed his work about them.

If you have ever been owned by a cat you will love this book.

This recording really brings alive the elegant translation by C. Day Lewis. It features Paul Scofield, Jill Balcon, Toby Stephens, Stephen Thorne, Geraldine Fitzgerald and John McAndrew. It is a joy to hear the beautiful, unhurried declamation of the actors who narrate the story and play the various characters. Full justice is given to the drama and the force of the poetry, especially the similes. This version is abridged, omitting most of Books III and V and all of Books VIII, IX, X and XI. The accompanying notes give a resume of all the books, so anyone not familiar with the epic is not left in the dark. There is also a helpful piece about the poem and brief details about the actors. The music from Fanelli's 'Symphonic Pictures' sets ... Read More:
