21.The Canterbury Tales (Penguin Classics) by: Geoffrey Chaucer

Books : The Canterbury Tales (Penguin Classics)
As is proved by the delightfully wicked set of stories mirroring in some respects Boccaccio's Decameron, which predated Chaucer, but which expand on bawdiness and give a fascinating insight into human nature: the very language is stripped of all ambiguity: for example, 'and sodeynly anon, Damyan gan pullen up hir smock and in he throng' is almost something out of a Jilly Cooper, although far more exotic!

And if you don't like the olde English, you can read the translation, which I think is extremely helpful if you're new to Chaucer or don't warm immediately to the lingo.

Books : Measure for Measure (Arkangel audiobooks)
Measure for Measure is seldom read, and not often performed in the United States. Why? Although many of Shakespeare's plays deal bluntly with sexual issues, Measure for Measure does so in an unusually ugly and disgusting way for Shakespeare. This play is probably best suited for adults, as a result.

I see Measure for Measure as closest to The Merchant of Venice in its themes. Of the two plays, I prefer Measure for Measure for its unremitting look at the arbitrariness of laws, public hypocrisy and private venality, support for virtue, and encouragement of tempering public justice with common sense and mercy.

The play opens with Duke Vincentio turning over his authority to his deputy, Angelo. But while the duke says he is leaving ... Read More:

Books : Talking Heads (BBC Radio Collection)
I am a fan of talking books, and I would describe many of the ones that I have heard as good, entertaining, thought provoking even. But this collection of stories stands so far above everything else that I have listened to that I can't see them ever being eclipsed. They are that very rare thing in literature - something that is brilliant, complex, moving - but absolutely not worthy, or 'difficult'. How many of us have struggled through a Booker prize winner because we 'ought to', when really it was too much like hard work? These stories are just so entertaining. You very quickly forget that they are monologues because the scenes and other characters are so real that you can see and hear them as if you were watching a full-cast production. You will be ... This brilliant book is written in the same style as all of Gervase's novels and has captured that extra bit of wit over his other works. He thinks up the funniest of lines for the children and teachers and makes you laugh out loud. I normally would not buy a poetry book but after glancing through the first few pages of this in the book shop i had no hesitation in purchasing. Gervase is a genius in capturing the athmosphere. Try it yourself.

25.The Comedy of Errors (Arkangel audiobooks) by: William Shakespeare

Books : The Comedy of Errors (Arkangel audiobooks)
Arkangel's audio version of Shakespeare's identical-twins comedy brilliantly solves the challenges of presenting this most visual of running gags as an invisible drama. The slapstick elements are gleefully indulged, but the quality of the cast ensures that the listener never loses touch with the darker anxieties (and deeper satisfactions) that Shakespeare conjures out of the story. Another triumph for this wonderful sequence of recordings, which is particularly strong in the comedies.

28.The Poetry of Yeats: Complete & Uabridged by: W.B. Yeats

Books : The Poetry of Yeats: Complete & Uabridged
This audiobook of Yeats' poetry consists of one cassette of about an hour's duration. Side one, with fourteen poems, is read by great actor Cyril Cusack, in a low, cool, thoughtful voice. I liked best his reciting of *No Second Troy*, *The Wild Swans at Coole*, *The Second Coming*, *Byzantium*, *Why Should Not Old Men Be Mad*, and *Lake Isle of Innisfree*.

Side Two is read equally well, again in a cool, controlled and musing voice, by Siobhan McKenna, another great presence on stage and screen. She recites twenty-two poems, including eight of the *Crazy Jane* titles, all fine, as well as other gems like *The Cat in the Moon* and *Leda and the Swan*.

The accents seem appropriate throughout. There is a late-at-night-with-a-single-candle-lit ... Read More:

29.The Lady in the Van/My Uncle Clarence (BBC Radio Collection) by: Alan Bennett

Books : The Lady in the Van/My Uncle Clarence (BBC Radio Collection)
'The Lady in the Van' is a completely true story. In the 1970's and 1980's outside Alan Bennett's own house in Camden an old lady (Miss Shepherd) lived in a Van in the street. After a time she could no longer stay on the street. Amazingly Bennett allowed her to move her Van into his garden and there she remained until she died.

This is a remarkable story, and its one of the funniest yet moving pieces of writing that I have ever read. Bennett is a marvellous observer of people and his humanity shines through. Miss Shephard's living conditions were frankly disgusting (just think of the smell) and this would be enough to put most people off having any contact with her at all.

Bennett here has written one of the finest works of moving and poignant ... Read More:
