Books : The Nation's Favourite Poems of Childhood (BBC Radio Collection)
What a wonderful book to buy or be given as a present. It brought back all those childhood memories of yesterday, last year and many years ago and now aged 54, it does seem many years ago. As the world aroundus changes it is good to get a book like this that reminds us of the those years that are very different to the ways and thoughts of today.
This range includes poets who bring back those carefree days playing in the woods and streets with the sounds and smells of childhood.
Well worth reading to the family of all ages.

Books : Juggling with Gerbils: Unabridged (Puffin audiobooks)
Mostly light hearted verse guaranteed to cheer you up. It reminds me of the Puffin books of humerous poetry in the 1970s when I was a lad. Amusing classics include: "Never play cricket with rats because..."; "Uncle Joe and the Roman Centurions" and of course "Juggling with gerbils". There are also some beautiful, and thought provoking poems such as : "The Soldier" and the two liner "What the mountain knows".

My children aged 9, 13 and 15 also thoroughly enjoyed it and I will be buying copies for my brothers (aged 45 & 48) and my father (ancient).

This is the second time in writing a review after having watched the television adaption of an Agatha Christie novel. Something draws me into comparing what it should have been like on the television. In the case of this book, the television has merely stolen some elements of the book, the characters names, and threw it all up in the air put Miss Marple in and come out with a completely different plot, setting, weather, back story and murderer.

Putting any TV adaptations to one side, this is an Agatha Christie book which does not have a main detective and relies on the character and wilful nature of Emily Trefusis who is out to prove that her fiancée, Jim Pearson her true love has not killed Captain Trevelyan, and that he is entirely ... 'The Merchant's Tale' is one of many of 'The Canterbury Tales'. Not only does it fit in well with the overall pilgrimage that Chaucer is relaying, but it is also stands well as a book alone. The story of Januarie and his hunt for the perfect wife is told in such an intricate and complex way, that it has a variety of interpretations. There are many arguments, for example relating to who is speaking in the marriage encomium at the beginning - is it Januarie, or the Merchant? The strong use of comic effects, especially satire, also make the book more accessable on a wider spectrum of levels. The interweaving levels of thought, coming from Januarie, the Merchant and Chaucer, leave the book very open to individual interpretation and a wide maze of enlightening discussions

10/10: this the value of Sylvia's voice. Deep into her own private poetry, she talks to her self and let us to listen her. Storm behind the clouds, her voice is the rain and we are the white (or grey) cloud. She is so quiet in this hyperballad, like a postmodern hypertext where the meaning is not all.I wonder why the Poetry, in our days, is only another slave of Establishment.
