If you want to understand the contemporary world and the forces affecting the paths of history then start here. Negri's intellect is rigorous and first-rate, his depth of insight outstanding. Normally he writes in a very intellectual style, using technical language and thought that is beyond that of the begginner. Here the writing is more disciplined and coherent, but doesn't lose any of its wealth. His use of historical materialism allows him to endows his work with a strong emprical basis which ensures that is statements are factual and to the point and he doesn't make wooly or doubtful assertions. His analysis of capital and its affects on human life is invigorating in its analysis of past events, prescient in its predictions for our present ... Read More:

This book is a fantastic way to learn about John Adams and it's a great way to be introduced to excellent historical biographical writing.

McCullough is a brilliant and exciting writer. He truly makes Adams come alive, and when Adams inevitably dies at the end it is decidedly sad.

Adams is a hero of the Republic. First a great friend, then a great rival, then a great friend again of Thomas Jefferson. John Adams is undeservedly overlooked by many students of American History.

Adams the republican vs Jefferson the populist was the great debate in American history and still continues today. Adams saw the horror of the French Revolution for what it was and predicted that it would end in depravity and violence and likely ... Read More:

Balfour remains an enigmatic figure. As a mass of contradictions he still poses problems to historians, who are invariably left wondering which diversion he considered his true calling; politician or philosopher? This sense of unease shows itself in every book written on Balfour and, though to a lesser extent, Adams' new biography is no exception. Although not so dazzled by his subject as Max Egremont, whose biography is still a useful introduction to Balfour's life and career, Adams reveals little of the man that was not already known. Happily, he avoids idle speculation regarding Balfour's emotional life and concentrates instead on a refreshingly objective and elegant study of his political beliefs and achievements. This is by far the best biography on Balfour ... Read More:

A disturbing but flawed book on one of the darkest chapters in world history. The court transcripts are disjointed and whole pages spread out a few lines onto the whole page. Depth and analysis is not what this book is about and I found the whole thing disjointed and in the end not very satisfying.

I have found this book helpful for both my AS and A2 options on Stalinist Russia. Has questions and answers from past A-Level papers, which I found tremendously useful. In addition, the book concentrates on the A-Level syllabus rather than adding unnecessary waffle - great to use throughout the course!

A good personal account with lots of detail and stories of individual actions. Not read any from this particular perspective before and it gives an interesting history for these 'volunteers' in the Waffen SS. It uses the war diaries of the author - comes across as credible and not a post war embelishment.

Apart from having her love for Seymour set aside so the King could marry her and managing to never put herself, Edward or those around them at risk of his jealousy; Parr was a stepmother to Mary, Elizabeth and Edward who tried to create a united family, she was a religious reformer who asserted herself too strongly and Henry arranged her arrest only to be persuaded otherwise at the last minute. If she hadn't been able to win Henry back round with some swift grovelling she could have lost her life. She probably would have been a great regent for Edward VI's minority. She's a exciting and vibrant figure.

This book lost a sense of Catherine the woman though by throwing a dozen dates and a family tree in every sentence. I appreciate the need for the dates and ... Read More:

If you have any interest at all in the intrigue of The Great Game or you have read John Buchans "Greenmantle" this is an absolute must. This has to be one of the easiest factual books I've ever read, with all the suspense of a thriller novel in the form of historical accounts. I honestly couldn't put the book down.

Sometime ago I read Nicolas Mosleys biographies on his father and was seeking a more indepth life of 'Tom' Mosley. I found it in Dorrils Blackshirt. A brilliant read and probably one of my favourite biographies. For a real insight of Mosley, his politics and those that surrounded him; this is the book. A cracking read.

Having known very little about Pakistani politics although I knew some things about Benhazhir Bhutto & was used to people slagging her off, I was very very glad to read her own account of her life & the ongoing discrimination she faced as an Asian woman studying at Oxford University. She shows no self-pity & time & time again shows how she had to make her own way in the world despite discrimination & seemed to care deeply about the ongoing terrorism in the world. A very brave lady, she knew she may have to give up her life in the cause of democracy - as tragically she did - & I am personally sick to death of hearing privileged people she studied with @ Oxford slag her off. Asian women have the right to enjoy life just as much as white women. She was an ... Read More:
