Thomas Cranmer was one of the inexperienced of all the 103 Archbishops of Canterbury when he was elevated from his brief tenure as Archdeacon of Taunton, after 20 years as a don at Cambridge, however despite this was to prove one of the most significant occupants of St Augustine's throne: his liturgy, the Act of 39 Articles, most of them identical to his 42 Articles, and the Royal Supremacy remain on the statute book to this day. In this magnificent and beautifully written book, MacCullock weaves together the theological and political parts of Cranmer's life, and provides a comprehensive account as to how these two motivations, often in conflict, impacted upon him.

Thomas Cranmer is a complex character, and MacCullock deals fully ... Read More:

For someone new to anarchism, the sheer breadth of thinking makes it very hard to understand its basic tenets. This really excellent anthology by Daniel Guerin, who, incidentally, wrote one one of the best short guides to anarchist history and theory, "Anarchism: from theory to practice", is a wonderful guide to the range of ideas.

Some of the book is arranged so as to present the ideas of particular thinkers, including (as MightyBoosh says), Proudhon, Bakunin (touching on his famous controversy with Marx within the First International), Kropotkin and Malatesta. Other parts of the book are arranged thematically to consider issues such as the Spanish collectives, the Kronstadt uprising, and anarcho-syndicalism.

I never lived through the anarcho-punk era, the Class War, the miners strike, occupations of universities in the 60s or anything else modern radicals hark on about. Reading Ian Bone's autobiography puts it all in some drink-fueled perspective with some insightful wit, cutting remarks and more sarcasm than an episode of Blackadder.

The book covers the life of Ian up until he packed most things in around 1986 and it's filled with his activities with his socialist parents, his discovery of anarchism after reading a copy of Punch at the dentists, student activism, Alarm and corruption in Swansea and the common factor... drink... LOTS of drink. It's an easy read (making me miss a morning's worth of lectures because I was so engrossed) that flows ... Read More:

Embarking on study again after many years away from education I have come to rely on the Oxford University Press, A Very Short Introduction To... series, as would a man with a broken leg on a pair of crutches. Nobody said philosophy would be easy, and how right they were. Rousseau is right up there as one of the most complex political philosophers of the bunch. His work as a champion of the French Revolution causing many people to have real issues with his work. He was equally lauded and reviled in his own lifetime, and this book gives a real sense of the ambiguities and complexities of the man and his mind. It's not always an easy read, and I found myself having to go back to sections and start again with this book. Having said that, the layout of ... Read More:

This book sets out to explain some of the common characteristics of Fascism beginning with Mussoloni's Italy and extending to other similar regimes and groups.

Fascism was less intellectually coherent than Marxist-Leninism (which was itself a mishmash of gross errors in my opinion) and therefore it is more difficult to say what exactly Fascism is and what it isn't.

One thing that I have noticed about this series and I write as someone who loaths Fascism/Nazidom is that why we are (rightly) warned against Fascism in this book, the ones on e.g. Anarchism or Socialism don't contain similar warnings.

Isn't it about time that the extreme left were vilified as much as the the extreme right neither of which have anything of ... Read More:

127.Oliver Cromwell (Profiles In Power) by: Barry Coward
August 22, 2000
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Oliver Cromwell (Profiles In Power)
This is an excellent brief study of some of the enigmas concerning the most controversial man in English history. The author is president of the Cromwell Association but this is no hagiography. Oliver is painted warts and all.

Cromwell is portrayed as a man motivated to see godly reformation in Britain. Aged 42 he was a farmer and MP of no consequence. In two years he was a general with a military reputation which enabled him to be at the forefront of English politics. he was no political theorist but a man who became as skilful a politician as he was soldier.

As a soldier he accepted recruits for their commitment not their gentility. A disciplinarian, he was loved by his troops whom he commanded with courage. he was more at home with his ... Read More:

For anyone interested in the historical Oskar Schindler, this is an exhaustively researched account of the life and death of the man, focused around his WWII-related activities.

While the subject matter is of huge interest it is (at least up to now - first 150 pages) quite tiresome. The author goes into tremendous detail in everything that touches Schindler, directly or indirectly, and there are chapters where Oskar is not even mentioned! It would make a much more interesting, easy and focused reading if he didn't explain the whole Sudetan history and politics, for instance: sure, it is of historical interest, and sure, Oskar came from that background, but so much detail is simply off topic...

The problem is that the author felt compelled ... Read More:
