Books : The Downing Street Years
This book is one of the most interesting political autobiographies I have read (and I've read many of them). I must confess that interest was intensified due to the fact that I worked in the House of Commons during her tenure in office, and indeed worked during the 1987 General Election for two Conservative Members of Parliament (David Amess of Basildon and David Evennett of Erith & Crayford--yes, I know, you've likely never heard of either of them).

This is actually the first volume of Margaret Thatcher's books to be published; the prequel is 'The Path to Power' and there is a follow-up, 'The Collected Speeches', but for those interested, 'The Downing Street Years' is the book to have.

It begins with the 1979 General ... Read More:

Not in the least.

There are examples of good political writing and this is definitely not one of them, it reads like the very worst sort of student text book and there is every chance that it was written for an academic student audience.

Although I would say this applies equally to some of Giddens other material, he has written a sociology book which has become a standard text which I found very unremarkable and unenlightening too.

It is also a very thin volume for the cover price. The content reads a lot like spin and political newspeak, this just aggrivated me and made me feel that Giddens either really had nothing original to say or felt deception was a good idea.

If you want a true sense of the ... Read More:

This must be one of the most famous accounts of mercenary warfare, written by Colonel "Mad Mike" Hoare, the ex-British officer asked to raise what became 5 Commando in the ex-Belgian Congo. The background will probably be unfamiliar to many people and should be explained.

The Congo circa 1900 had been the personal property of King Leopold of the Belgians. The overseers of the slaving Africans were wont to whip and even mutilate their charges, the excesses being exposed by the later-hanged Roger Casement. Things improved: missionaries, settlers, Albert Schweitzer and colonial administrators gave the Congo order, hygiene and an economy. That all changed after 1960. Pressured to give "independence" to their colony, Belgium withdrew. Chaos gathered. ... Read More:

Fantastic book which helped me so much in writing my dissertation on the politics of Northern Ireland and the 'Big Man's' part in it! Paisley's political flip-flopping and dangerous words throughout the troubles are fascinating - a great read for anyone researching the troubles and wanting to go beyond the usual tired cliches on the subject! Moloney is a talent, his book on the IRA is equally fascinating!

Albert Speer's seminal work on life inside the highest echelons of the Third Reich is as historically controversial now as it was when it was released and indeed is still a fascinating read.
In fact largely `ghost written' by Joachim C. Fest who had a not insignificant impact on the style of the prose, Inside The Third Reich is a veritable Goldmine for anecdotal remarks for any student studying the history of Hitler's Germany.
Historical bias aside - there is plenty and the debate is seemingly endless - it is still worth the effort and the reader would probably benefit from having a copy of Sereny's biography to hand to see how Speer's `Mia Culpa's' developed in face of ten years of mixed reception to his work.

François Bizot's memories paint the Cambodian power struggle between the Red Khmers and their enemies, as well as the fall of Phnom Penh, from an original point of view. He was as a Western citizen directly involved in the action; first, as a prisoner accused of being an American spy, and later as an official intermediary between the French Embassy and the new regime.

As a prisoner, he was confronted and discussed heavily with the latter chief of the horrible S21 death camp, a teacher of mathematics and a staunch ideologue: Douch.
As all Red Khmer leaders, Douch had absolutely no respect for individual lives (except his own): `it's the same with the monuments at Angkor ... who now thinks about the countless individuals who died for the endless labor? The ... Read More:

This is the most brilliant piece of writing sustained by the lovely voice of Patrick French. It is an enthralling extraordinary story and I fell in love with Patrick and had to ration myself so I didn't finish it too quickly. Buy it.
