Nations and Nationalism is a readable account of the birth and rise of nationalism, but suffers from its mechanistic portrayal of society. Put simply, Gellner sees the rise of cities through industrialisation as creating, ex nihilo, modern nationalsim. The movement away from the agrarian, peasant existance to one of nineteenth-century economism leads Gellner to believe that before industrialisation there was no nationalism, and after it there will be nothing in the future other than nationalism. For an author who chides Marx over his determinist viewpoint, Gellner makes the identical mistake with nationalism as Marx did with materialsim. Read this book because it presents some useful introductory concepts, but be warned that the books I've ... Read More:

Gregory Wilpert has managed a rare feat by writing a simultaneously comprehensive while concise book about the compelling contemporary situation in Venezuela.

The most striking aspect of this book is how informative it is with a plethora of sources. As well as this concentration of inormation is a convincing anlaysis which is clearly sympathetic with the process of change in Venezuela while remaining consistently critical.

In this respect it is far superior to the majority of Venezuela books out there which are often rich with personal anecodates of what the atmosphere of a barrio is like but much lighter on what is happening in more concrete terms. That it avoids romanticising the Bolivarian revolution or hero-worshipping ... Read More:

To begin with: this book is a pamphlet, not (as I had expected) a treatise. It is a call to action about a specific event, not a political programme. Readers expecting a statement of the conservative creed may be disappointed. Hence the 4, not 5 stars.

As a historical document, however, the Reflections are invaluable. Burke published his point-by-point assault on the French Revolution in 1790, when the revolution was still widely popular in Britain. He was an English MP and his public, even if the Reflections are formulated as two letters to a French aristocrat, was British political opinion.

First, his book contrasts admirably the gradual, and ultimately more successful, British path to democracy to the French. Indeed the ... Read More:

Tremendous breadth and perspective on the major political dilemmas of our time from a wise scholar of the academy and citizen of the world. Everyone from experts to laypersons can enjoy, understand, and gain from Dahl's insights and characterizations regarding the fundamental political dilemmas of our time. Rarely, does such a combination of scholarly erudition and simple prose ever come along. I am greatful to Robert Dahl for contributing and elevating political discourse here and around the world with this book. Please read it if you are remotely interested in the politics of any country and the politics of the world. You can probably read it in one long sitting.

On another level, this book will forever remain the textual staple ... Read More:

Mussolini by R.J.B. Bosworth is an interesting book which offers some insights into the rise and fall of Mussolini. It shows that Mussolini was a terrible man but not as bad as some of his contemporaries and perhaps could if the Second World War had not happened could have perhaps ended up like Franco in Spain. It also dispels the view that he was an incompetent figure of ridicule by showing that while not being an intellectual he was far from a buffoon. However, the book suffers from a lack of structure in places, the mention of figures and events with no explanation as to who they were or why they occured and in places a rather pretentious tone. All in all a good book but rather wordy and a little hard-going.
