It is the first book on the subject I have had to opportunity to read. It is the best study. It is mostly BASED on texts from the time of William Wallace, of course those texts are quoted. But, the only thing is I thought it required former KNOWNLEDGE due to the several details given by the book. A (former) general knownledge is probably recommend, as a first reading I would suggest "On the trail of William Wallace" by David Ross. This book is a must have for anyone who wants to study the subject.

This is a hefty book, but it grabs you from page one, and never lets go, every page being of the same high standard. I only read biographies, and have previously read quite a lot about the Kennedys, but this is one of the best books I have ever read, infact I was very sorry to finish it. It is a fascinating mix of social history, combined with an indepth look into lives of generations of Kennedy women, whose contributions gradually moulded the Kennedy dynasty, but to a large extent have been overlooked and probably undervalued. If there was ever a perfect example of 'the power behind the throne' this is it, but you also come to understand the price they paid as individuals.
The title says it all, this book is a mix of triumph and tragedy, ... Read More:

Known for his excellently researched and painstakingly detailed books I picked this up with some trepidation. It took me a while to plough through it. I feel that there is a little too much detail for the general reader especially in the 1920s and early thirties. The sections on the two wars, and his exciting early life are much more readable. The book is also very much from the Churchillian point of view and does not devote much space to opposing points of view. This is a good book for seeing the world through Churchill's eyes.

The author of this book, has on the whole written a balanced account of President Bush's first 6 years in office. There are some rather journalistic lampoons sprinkled throughout the book, but he also writes sympathicaically about Bush where it was due, for instance his relationship with his father, the 41st president and his genuine religious beliefs. So overall a surprisingly unbiased book given the very partisan viewpoints that exist about the 43rd president.

That the author had any decree of personal access to Bush is a bit surprising given the hostile attitude that the President has admitted he has against the fourth estate. But the author does reveal a wide range of candid anecdotes that illustrates some of the reasoning behind the White House's ... Read More:

The most extraordinary, scary and believeable book I have ever read. It explains so many things I simply didn't understand. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Buy it. Read it. And get your friends to read it.

This is an excellent scholarly overview of many aspects of the Nazi dictatorship and deserves to be read widely. With its study of often very complex ideas which require the use of correspondingly complex language, it is not as easily readable as, for example, the author's two-volume biography of Hitler and "The Hitler Myth: Image and Reality in the Third Reich". However, perseverance with this text is very rewarding.

Mr Buttery's new book on the life of Louis Nolan is a must for all Crimean War or 19th Century British Army enthusiasts.

Nolan is a complex and (thanks to his role in the Charge of the Light Brigade, plus later portrayals in film and fiction) semi-mythical figured, obscured by the controversy that surrounds his last moments. One biography, published by Moyle Bartlett back in the 1970's, in part remedied this, but there is still a veil drawn over the life of this man, even to the extent that few will agree what nationality he was.

Mr Buttery throws open the curtains on Nolan's life. He looks at his early years, and his time in the Austrian Army, where he cut his military teeth, as well as his books about military equestrianism. His role in the Crimea ... Read More:

This short study work is an excellent demonstration of the pressure of brevity refining analytical thought. There is a helpful narrative framework, upon which many strands of analysis are hung. The resulting effect is to leave a firm awareness of the historical context of Mrs. Thatcher's premiership; with fair minded and objective analysis of her person and her policies. The conclusive historiographical exercise is an excellent stimulus to further analysis.
